Oh, Yes they are!

This is going to hurt Toyotas overseas image and sales far worse than some people think.

Why the worry? A little WD-40 spray in and around all working parts of the accelerator pedal and all connections with it should suffice.

I'd trust a high-milage suspect Toyota before I would a new, fresh-off-the-assembly line American POS. And I'm American.

Japanese car makers keep quiet about defects in cars sold in Japan, hence the lack of consumer concern. No doubt the true picture will be revealed during a future "regrettable" scandal.

Have they forgotten how Mitsubishi literally threw complaints into a locker to hide them away? Toyota's President didn't make those comments at a press conference or in a meeting with suppliers and/or customers. He was inexplicably attending the Davos conference in Switzerland and was tracked down by a camera crew.

As much as the local Toyota groups are denying any problems with locally produced cars the backlash will put Toyota in the same league as Mitsubishi and the dodo. It's going to take quite a few years for consumer confidence to return to Toyota cars and if the locals think it is not going to effect them they are sadly mistaken.

“We don’t welcome this kind of thinking at all,” he told The Associated Press. “No matter what, we believe we have responded speedily to a problem that has come up.”

USA courts wont agree. Toyota will have to pay bigtime.

Because lawsuits here give pennies to the victim's while in the states they get multi-million dollar settlements. Japanese are always terrible to each other. Just saw the news that everyone who ones a Toyota in America are worried about their cars. People aren't driving them. Many are considering lawsuits. Are we seeing the end of Toyota.... Yes! Good bye Mr. T.... Can't sell American's junk and get away with it like you do in Japan.

Japanese often assume that Japan-made products are better than those made abroad

You couldn't get a better quotation encapsulating the Japanese psyche than this.

"Japan not as worried about U.S. Toyota recalls"

Well if Japantoday is any indication- 5 main stories and more than 125 comments- I find that hard to believe.

Those kind of problems definitely won’t happen in Japan,” he said.

Sounds like the beginning of a horror movie: Nope, won't happen here, not a chance! It's happening all over the world, except here! Never ever ever! Then Takashi Itoh will be the next victim.

They were made there. Those kind of problems definitely won’t happen in Japan,

The nativity combined with a dumb smugness is worrisome. Have they all forgotten those safety scandals?

Snow Brand chocolates, Akafuku sweets, Hinaidori meat, Fujiya cream puffs, Ishiya sweets, Mitsubishi Trucks, Fukushima nuclear power plant cracks, ...

The scandal over cracks in reactors began on 22 August 2002 when Japan's largest power company, Tokyo Electric Power, admitted it had covered up such flaws in its reactors in the 1990s [...]

An initial report [...] disclosed that crude attempts had been made to disguise repairs to the emergency core cooling system at one of the company's Fukushima reactors. "After repairing with clamps, the clamps were painted to be inconspicuous," the report said.

Last week three other major companies said they had also concealed cracks in reactor cooling systems [...]

If there was any doubt Toyota would try and pass the blame to it's supplier it's over now. I don't know why anyone should believe them and I am looking forward to a real investigation.

“Toyota appears to be trying to respond with care,”

Dunno about that. Toyota's first reaction was "Accidents? What accidents?" Suddenly they're scrambling to fix "accidents" that never happened.

These pedals are designed by Toyota and made by CTS. If it is a design flaw and others are making the same design -it would make sense that the Japanese models with the same pedal design have the flaw also.

Very few people have problems with these pedals, however if your car has any problems get it fixed. Signs of the problem: car takes awhile to idle after off throttle, accelerating when off throttle.
