On the fence on whether this is a good investment. They need the energy, but 1) odd ecomomic marriage and 2) There are other resources that could/should be explored with that amount of money.

It's good to see Japan trading with its neighbors and building a future with them rather than lining up the artillery!

More of this kind of cooperation is needed!

Hope this project is not linked to the Northern Islands of Japan dispute that have been stolen by Russia. . If so, Japan is sending a WRONG signal that it is okay for Russia to claim the whole Islands.

Why do you need to do this with Russia? There are enough LPG Japan can import from elsewhere. Also you are not doing enough home works on LPG resources. There are some LPG around the islands of Japan. Also, you are not creating enough tax incentives for Green Energy.

Of course it is linked with the Northern island territory dispute. Japan is providing investment in exchange of closed door negotiation for the islands to be returned.

Remember Putin making comments about considering holding talks about this issue a little while back?

Japan and Russia can never resolve their dispute over the Kurils by pressing legal or historical claims alone. There are simply too many threads to the story which are entangled by time and knotted by failed compromise efforts in the past. A joint economic project in the Russian Far East (Primorsky Krai) will give both sides a new chance to excuse each others transgressions without losing public face. It is a kind of uber diplomatic solution based on the principle of greater aligned economic interests trumping lesser matters of territorial dominion. Besides, the knock-on benefits of having a regional LNG producer partner will bring better payoffs for Japan than any equivalently costly domestic energy investment.

No good news, sorry! With a little more vision and leadership, Japan would smartly translate such mind-boggling amounts of money into promoting renewables and ensuring its energy independence, cleanliness, security and sovereignty.

Yeah, this won't end badly... Russia has had zero compunction about cutting natural gas to Europe when it serves it's political needs. They are better to diversify between the US and Canada.

Under U.S. pressure, Japan was forced to agree to join the sanctions against Iran and cut its imports of Iranian oil, which account for 10 percent of the country’s total oil imports. Cooperation with Russia is a promising option to overcoming the crisis. With this agreement, Japan and Russia have substantial prospects for expanding cooperation, especially in the energy sphere. Japan has always counted on Siberian oil and gas. After the 3/11 disaster, Russia, in a desperate request from Japan, sharply increased supplies of liquefied natural gas. The problem is, however, that Japan has always linked progress in relations with Russia to the demand for return of the Kurile Islands. So, if Japan cooperate with Russia in the energy field and Japan has currently very few other options – it will have to moderate its territorial claims on Russia.
