I'm all for it, but only if the women are capable of doing the job. You do women no favors if you promote them above their ability when all they will get is "burnout".

For years Japan has continued to be an outdated society while other countries have changed for the better.

Control and needless bureaucratic rules which strangle entrepreneurs in Japan are on the rise

The LDP is at the forefront of this stagnation.

It is only now when firms from outside Japan are seeking to invest in Japan that the Japanese male dominated elites are taking notice

Clear discrimination and two tier systems where female opportunities are constrained don’t sit well with more enlightened outside investors

Yet, any changes that will occur will also be a chance for the self serving political elites to widen the trough width so more snouts can take turns at sucking up whatever becomes available

I'm sure this 'news' has been popping up every year for the last 10 years.... or more.....

There should no target percentage for gender equality in the workplace. The jobs should be given on merit and knowledge regardless of gender.

9 ( +15 / -6 )

And a target for left-handed board members.

And a target set for those who wear eyeglasses.

And a percentage who are farmers.

And a percentage should be LBGT.

And a percentage with no university degree.

Be inclusive, Japan.

Japan set a target for companies listed on the top-tier Prime Market of the Tokyo bourse to achieve the ratio of female board members surpassing 30 percent by 2030, a draft policy blueprint on women's empowerment showed Monday

Here is a problem. One never hears, "I", "My", or "Me" , it's ALWAYS Japan, the proverbial collective!

"We", of the policy board, have set a goal..... "I" PM Kishida have set a goal.......

"Here's our policies on how "WE" are going to get it done!"

Too damn easy to say "Japan", because when it fails, as it has numerous times in the past under then PM Abe, who made "Womens Rights" issues and "Breaking the Glass Ceiling" issues that JAPAN had to correct, almost a decade ago! (Guess what, failure from the start)

People, individuals, have to start stepping up to the plate AND take responsibility to get things done! Dont just talk about it, set up programs to train women the leadership SKILLS they need to succeed! Done hire them just because they fit the quota. Train them, educate them, empower them, and most of all RESPECT them as equals. But give them the skills they need to succeed.

Japan has "leaders" in name only! They have no SKILLS to actually be a true leader, and only are called such, because they won an election! It's BS of the blind leading the blinder!

Another goal that they obviously cannot achieve. While it is good that they are improving childcare support and benefits, that is obviously not the main reason that the executive positions at companies are filled with Japanese men.

"As part of efforts to enhance women's empowerment at home, the government would request companies listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange to nominate at least one female board member by around 2025, according to the draft."

Can't say no to the money from Norwegian sovereign wealth fund. Hope the Norwegians also confirm that the women sitting on the boards aren't someone else's sock puppets put there to act as the token female.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

That’s mathematically simple. Assumed, they try hardest possible but can find only one woman per company. Then just make the board as small as three persons. Automatically the quota is 33% then, in all other cases, never, or only if they really find also a big number of qualified women for the bigger company boards that have more than three persons.

Been here 23 years and have heard the same old story 23 years.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Saw something flash up in Japanese characters on the Japanese idiot box and thought it was great news that hey we're finally well on their way to better achieving better gender equity in the workplace after all these MANY years of asking to achieve it. But now finding out that is only still just a goal!???? And it's still stuck at two-point-something percent?

All this tells you is that the status quo will be maintained just as it has been so far. More lip service, and people here accept it, as per usual.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Decades of same blablabla and nothing has changed and will. And people still believe in it as nobody want to be the black shape innthe "we".

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

My incompetent boss who many people complained about just got promoted. Everyone thought she was going to be fired for always going home early and taking constant naps, but nope, instead she gets rewarded because of our low female quota. Never thought it would happen, but it just did.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

So many promotions over more capable men just because of inclusion diversity policies. Which is wrong. Similarly seen the opposite as well.

Dream on!!!

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Cue the wives and daughters of existing company directors being coopted to the boardrooms.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

That’s what they said at least altwo

decades ago when Koizumi was in power, then again, and even when Abe took power again and it was pointed out he had TWO women in the entire cabinet. They use the same spiel every time there’s some gender equality ranking and Japan finishes near dead-last in the world

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Giving them the expressed possibility of becoming an executive is what needs to happen. Everyone knows Japan has some of the most educated women in the world but almost all are held down by pointless opinions or old thinking.

mall the people saying “if they are qualified sure” is the biggest, well duh on the internet. Problem is they are qualified and are refused raises or even viewed as possible positions of power purely cause of their gender. “Ahh she’s a woman.. she’ll have to take care of her family instead of working sometimes”

yeah right

For those with a similar misunderstanding of how sexual discrimination works please do a little research before making such comments. It's not a complicated phenomena just an unfamiliar one to most men

Miss the pint much? Gender should not be part of any job. The job should go to anyone with the capabilities to do it.

As I see it, whether Japan can achieve over 30% of female executives in key firms by 2030 depends on various factors, including the effectiveness of new initiatives, cultural and societal attitudes towards gender roles, and the pace of change in Japanese business practices.

While progress is being made, it is challenging to determine the exact timeline for achieving specific targets. The headline reads well, however it's misleading at best.

Miss the point much?

All talk and no Action… Ifs / buts candies and nuts. Starting sound like some kinda challenge to be stupid, dumb and boring or just borng dumb and dumber? Get on with it already.

Back to Abenomics? Didn't work back then, why would it this time around?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Don't know how it can be done but all efforts must be exerted so selection is based entirely on merit.

Presently, even among men, selection is not based entirely on merit.

Underr same conditions even if a percentage composed of women is purposely hired it will still be based on same system. It's doubtful that the best women among the candidates will be hired.

So it's the selection process that needs to be changed.

If it is based entirely on merit women would be naturally included.

No need to set a target which actually is further limiting to women

The Norwegian state fund first has to announce not willing to buy anymore Japanese company assets and shares due to non-existence of women in executive boards. Only after that Japanese government considers to change something. Money rules

Really? That seems extreme

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

You have to remember that many women don't even want to deal with these positions, but then you have your few, but don't expect to get 30% out off it, just the way it is here and most are happy with it that way

Board membership? Why wouldn't they want that?

And how did you know?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Ah, why not make it 2115, with the free motorways, and announce two policy achievements at the same time? Got more chance, tbh.

Board director positions are usually filled with people with successful people from a variety of industries who bring solid experience, contacts, political connections, etc., and people from investor groups and even suppliers.

If you look at the candidates without knowing the sex or names, equality of opportunity, the short list will not have many women now.

Do you abandon merit and peek at the name or sex to stuff the ballot box?
