It's a nice idea on paper but the real thing is different ballgame. Many companies would have to distribute their special software to the employees home which is almost impossible with license restrictions.

this is funny, my company is trying to do this, they are setting up small offices around Tokyo to work at but then they require you to come back to the office to sign out.. mostly people signing out at 8pm and not allowed to charge overtime. haha defeats the purpose and dumb.

What they need to do is have stay at home and work days. They never will though because you cant kiss boss butt from home..

What will managers do if everyone works at home?

I attempted to introduce fellow teachers to computer-aided learning and they really really disliked it because there was nothing for them to do but watch students learn without them.

i feel managers will feel the same way sitting at their desks in their offices alone with nothing to do.

How the hell is that going to work? This country is not designed for "telework"...

Big companies need to start opening up branches like banks and shop franchises. Instead of concentrating their work force on a single giant building in Shinagawa or Shinjuku. Most people in a giant building never socialize with people on different floors, they might as well be on a different part of the city and no one would notice. Tax incentives for people who work and live in the same 区 or 市, companies no longer need to pay commute. Meetings between teams in different parts of the city can be held with teleconferences. Spread the rent and land value more equally. I could go on.

This could and should happen now we have such amazing communication technologies. The main problem is that people, especially Japanese companies, are set in their ways. It is also clear that many Japanese companies value sacrifice to the cause over employee welfare.

It is happening with some larger companies. They are changing the workspace to an open workspace, i.e., no dedicated desk. You get a PC to use from home, and you come to work when you need to.

The company save on office rent. The problem is now the cost of the workspace is pushed off to the employees who probably don't have a lot of space at home to work from.

In some specific cases, it may work great. For example, move out of Tokyo to a cheaper location and spend one day/two days (one night) a week in Tokyo.

As in IT field, we telework quite often. Especially, when there is issue and we need to be able to fix things and bring production back on line. Never mind, odd hours for upgrade, etc. Now, with more people than office desks, more are working from home. Fortunately, I still have a desk in the office. If not, I would probably only come into the office maybe a few times a month.
