Japan to import 7,000 tons of butter after milk production falls due to 2013 heat wave

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to import 7,000 tons of butter after the heat wave during the summer of 2013 led to a drastic decline in the domestic production of raw milk which further led to an insufficient amount of stockpiled butter and other milk products.

The ministry said stockpiles of butter at the end of March this year amounted to only about 17,000 tons, a decrease of approximately 6,000 tons in comparison to the same time in 2013, Fuji TV reported Thursday.

In preparation for production of Christmas cakes and other goods, the ministry said the extra 7,000 tons of butter will be imported beginning in the fall and up until the end of November.

well YongYang - I presume you only buy imported butter only anyway since 3/11! Why would you care? In all fairness, there are some lovely imported (if pricey) french butters available in Japan.

Oh dairy me. Some foreign producers will be milking the profits. Butter good reason to stock up now would be to avoid getting creamed later in the year (It's okay, I'm not giving up the day job).

Spinach bata-itame, gratin (white sauce), bata raisu, french toast, bata jaga, hottoke-ki, negi glace. There must be way more. I get through a lot of butter.

@cleo: Thank you, So Japanese people eat like rural Americans.. Buter Rice? Eating spinach with butter instead of Su and Goma abura. They must be using long grain rice to eat rice with butter. Abenomics caused Japanese people to eat that kind of vomiting type food instead of sushi rice and seafood.

Long grain rice would be nice occasionally, but no, butter goes better with the round, sticky pudding rice that's ubiquitous in Japan. Been eating delicious bata-itame, gratin, bata-jaga etc etc for way longer than Abenomics has been a word. I'm not letting Abe take any of the credit for the delectability of my cooking. Vinegar and sesame oil have their place, but on spinach? Blechh. Dead fish? More Blechh.

Patatoes are called daiyoshoku. You might like long grain rice but Japanese people eat short grain rice. Tofu and miso soup. Using butter for rice? Japanese people do not like long grain rice. They even use short grain rice when they cool yakimeshi. Azuki beans are tasty for sweet confection, No butter needed to cook.

Butters imported must be used for something else in food industry. Maybe somethin concocted by food processor companies?

Spinach is used for sunomono dish.

Probably 80% for sweets, cakes, danish, kashipan, shokupan... that so many get for any meal, for snacks, all day. It's like in other country, industry has won, the mass buy, eat, sh*t, repeat.

@cleo: I have been visiting Japan at least once in a year/ Yes, I am old but not that much old like left Japan in 1910: You think I am older than 100 years old? We have business and consulting business that require snooping Japan every years. My siblings in Japan feed us whenever I bother them. Their children;s family, too. Because my daughters do not speak Japanese, I have to explain what Japanese whisper behind of their back. Anyway, next time I visit Japan, I will see if Japanese people eat food you mentioned.
