People should encourage everyone they know to stop purchasing any goods manufactured in America.

Also stop eating McDonald's KFC e.t.c

It is probably best way for individuals to protest.

Fight back like Canada, Europe and all others country are doing. That the only way trump will (not sure about it) understand.

Wouldn’t virtually everything found at a Japan-based McDonald's or KFC be produced outside the U.S.?

Doesn’t McDonald’s Japan get its beef from Australia? Doesn’t KFC Japan rely on Japanese chicken and chicken feed suppliers?

6 ( +19 / -13 )

Tell them If the USA want to fix up their debt to give up their 750. military bases world wild. That alone will save a trillion $ a year. Tell them that you starting to require nuclear weapons as a deterrent system so the USA bases a useless because the are base an attack platform so it encourages attacks. Also tell them Japan will be buying Canada crude so to be fully independent of the USA. Japan. don,t need the USA. Show them the door to isolation.

The profits flow to the US. McDonald’s Holdings Japan’s biggest shareholder by far is the US parent company (almost all other major holders are US investment funds).

So a part of every Yen you spend at one of those places ends up in Wall Street pockets.

Want a burger? Eat at a Japanese chain.

we strongly urged the U.S. government

This guy is not great at negotiations. He either has the cards, which he doesn't, or not gonna be able to negotiate a deal with the US.

Tariffs are also bad for U.S. consumers.

Trump is driving the U.S. economy into a ditch.

20 ( +24 / -4 )

Boycott all things American " - typed on an Iphone while sipping Starbucks coffee.

How many will actually follow through?

10 ( +17 / -7 )

driving the economy into the ditch is what they want.

companies go the edge of bankruptcy and can be a acquired by the oligarchy for pennies on the dollar.

making people destitute means their houses can be acquired at deflated prices.

making people destitute means they will accept any wage and work conditions to survive.

wall street makes the most money in highly volatile markets. the more chaos, the more money they make off shorting stocks and credit swaps.

banks and lenders make more from destitute people borrowing to have food and shelter. using housing for collateral pays off.

tough time for japan and the auto industry. there a revolt growing. trump has walked back most of his tariffs, so we’ll see.

Boycotting Costco would be a good start. All the profits go to the States. Nothing goes to the local area or Japan. In December, the Nanjo Costco was raking in 10,000,000 per day. There should be a Costco tariff.

So you are advocating for people to hurt their own economies? KFC Japan or Germany have really nothing to do with the US overall since they are a franchise; the US gets a percentage, but overall most of the money stays in those countries, but if it makes libs feel better, go ahead

The market doesn't like tariffs

banks and lenders make more from destitute people borrowing to have food and shelter. using housing for collateral pays off.

In the short term, it doesn't help them that much.

We shall see.

What a bunch of nonsense! Costco Japan makes money from selling goods and membership fees. Most of the profit stays in Japan to cover local costs like wages, rent, taxes, and to open new stores. After covering these expenses, a portion of the remaining profit is sent back to the U.S. headquarters.

So, Japan keeps a lot of the profit for local operations and growth, while the U.S. gets some of it through dividends or fees.

Everyone can do their part. No matter how small, it will make a difference. I hadn't thought about Starbucks—thank you for pointing it out.

And it won't make a lick of difference because MOST people will not waste their time boycotting something that they need or cannot be without, like TikTok, which will be in US hands very soon.

You are welcome. I do wonder however whether Starbucks popularity in Japan ( which in itself is a puzzle to many ) will be affected. I don't think so. Ditto for Costco with the inflation pressuring the average household grocery costs.

Fight back like Canada, Europe and all others country are doing.

How well has that been going?

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

There should be a Costco tariff.

40 percent of the store is full of European and Japanese products.

It won't. As of July 2021, Fukuoka Prefecture alone was home to 48 Starbucks stores, equating to approximately 0.93 stores per 100,000 residents.

Ditto for Costco with the inflation pressuring the average household grocery costs.

It's not just imported vehicles but parts from the global supply chain, so even US-built cars will be subject to tariffs. This could see US auto-workers laid off. The additional costs will be unpopular in the US and increase inflation. Nothing kills a regime like inflation. Once the impact hits, Trump may declare victory and remove the tariffs.

For now, the tariffs rule out selling vehicles to the US for a period, so reduce production accordingly. Some workers in Japan will have to shift to others sectors (many of which are desperate for staff). Airline staff did this during Covid, you may recall.

A dependency on one market is not a good plan. Everyone buys cars. If you make good ones, they will still sell - just not in the US. It's a big planet. Time for your sales staff to earn their corn.

This is a USG policy. It is not a policy favoured by many American people or companies, not least because they will have to pay the extra tariff-taxes. So why target them with boycotts? Don't lash out at people for what their governments do. They have no control over their government, just as you have no control over your government. Would you want to be held responsible for everything your government does? Japanese branches of Starbucks are staffed by Japanese people. Why would you want to punish them? Keep calm and carry on. Let the orange idiot chuck his toys out his pram. His idiot policies will be his undoing.

On the plus side, South Korea and Japan now have something to agree on: The US is an unreliable ally.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Truth is the US administration has an interest that societies are increasingly weak, lost, and therefore easy prey for economic, political, and ideological interests.

To put it with the Political Analyst and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs: ‘

The United States are the most lawless and dangerous country in the world by far’

5 ( +9 / -4 )

DIVERSIFY. Not only products, but market. Don't depend on trump to think logically. Look at how he treats long time allies. Know how his mind works; it's either for his ego or the grift. He doesn't care about anything else.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Will be interesting to see whether Trump will follow through on his promise of getting tough on Japan due to "currency manipulation" and the yen being too low.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Boycotting Costco would be a good start.

This is a company that treats its workers quite well. Also, McDonald's employees would be the worst hit, who are all mostly Japanese. Boycots and tariffs hurt everyone.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

if US market will be hard for business try other countries-japanese cars are wanted everywhere.

this may be temporary thing without any big effect.

same time dont loose your face Japan and do same.who wants buy new american car-may need pay more.

to be EQUAL.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Japan will not do anything against US. Just as before, just as always

6 ( +10 / -4 )

it’s not Japanese people that are going to feel the negative aspects of the tariffs but the Japanese car companies.

Let’s remember that Mitsubishi,Isuzu and Toyota etc have a decades old history of manufacturing cars outside Japan.

Produce cars for the US market?

Make them in the US then!

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

How ungrateful is Donald Trump, Japan is the most loyal vassal state as US allies, it was a sudden death like a stab in the back !

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Bass: You can not do. maths. Kyushu. population 12,750,000 divide by 48 stores is about 270,000 per store. Your Fox News, Disney, Warner Bros education really needs a refresher. LOL Are all USAmerican that incapable of Year 3 maths. Not one USAmerican on this thread could see the error. That really bad for a supposed highly educated society. This why you voted in Trump twice. No critical thinking from not one of you.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Produce cars for the US market?

Good luck. The USA has like 50 cars plants, yet still imports 1/2 it's cars. Getting the capacity up is gonna take awhile. And the thousands more you will be paying for cars, that won't ever come down, even if you did manage to get another few dozen plants.

It’s not Japanese people that are going to feel the negative aspects of the tariffs but the Japanese car companies.

You are aware that Japanese plants employ... Japanese people? So when 1.5 million vehicles are no longer shipped to the USA due to tariffs, you think that has no impact?

Trump is not as healthy as he or his cult believe and will pass from this world, so in the meantime we need to resist fascism before it is too late....

4 ( +5 / -1 )

How odd as we were told US tariffs only negatively affect Americans so other countries will just ignore those.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

No, its because the US is actively trying to harm Japan through tariffs that Japan, out of necessity, should join the EU, Canada, Australia, South Korea, the UK.... and pretty much the rest of the world for that matter (except Russia of course) in ignoring the US as an economic partner.

Well thought and logical argument based on reality not temper tantrums and / or feelings of the day.

Can't find anyone in the article or the comments making that statement.

Lots of comments by people saying tariffs harm both countries, which I think is true. America is hurting both Japan and America with these tariffs.

My company has canceled all business trips to America. My wife and I also have canceled our trip to California.

I am Canadian (living in Japan), so I feel doubly-compelled to boycott as best I can.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

I'd go for the tariffs boycott, but Japanese are never going to take a stake about anything. Ask them to change their iphones to whatever Sony is making these days.

Don't lash out at people for what their governments do. They have no control over their government, just as you have no control over your government.

Yes they do. It's the majority of USA people the one that elected him.
