No they are not in the same position. If Shell is "comitted" to selling that means that they have already held a BOD meeting and issued a resolution directing the company officers to sell the subject interests. That is a far cry from Mitsubishi Shoji and Mitsui & Co, who have not done that.
Tom San
Kishida should have thought twice before opening his mouth.

You forgot to mention Japan had been accepting refugees from Turkey which is the country accepting the most refugees by an official UNHCR record
kennyG
How much does a peace treaty or any treaties with Soviet Union/current Russia mean to you? Enough of such perfunctory, superficial international agreements to be to ignored. There's no peace until current Russia to be broken down to several independent nations. So is the case for current CCP China....
kennyG
Japan had been accepting refugees as defined by the treaty since before it signed up the treaty in 1981.
Septim Dynasty
India is on the side of India.
Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne
Japan had an opportunity to sign a treaty concerning these islands twice - once with the Soviets and once with Russia.
Both times the USA has intervened.

India really isn't that fond of Japan !
India isn't involved in the sanctions game against Russia and is rapidly on track to be a major economy again whilst Japan and the USA economies are floundering.
Alan Harrison
At least Japan isn't hypocritical like most western countries on the refugees, it just refuses everyone.
It is very hypocritical for Japan to sign up to the United Nations Convention for Refugees, and then refuse everyone.
Mr Kipling
Russia has 50% plus one share of this "joint venture" so in reality has total control. Japan may now have to think a little harder where there gas is going to come from or whether they should toe the US line quite so closely.
OssanAmerica
Re-read my post carefully as to why a having an intl judgement in Japan's favor would be a benefit.

At least Japan isn't hypocritical like most western countries on the refugees, it just refuses everyone.
The west is fast tracking Ukrainians at a near reverse of how it went about things with Syrians.
Australia hlin 3 months has accepted more Ukrainians than Syrians in 3 years. By August Australia will have accepted more Ukrainians than Syrians.
The USA took in fewer than 20,000 Syrians but has already taken in 15,000 Ukrainian and approved 100,000.
So before bashing Japan look at the racist policies of the western countries.

Funny the world didn't care when it was Africa, Asia, Middle East, etc...!
Suddenly it is white Europeans and the world is expected to all rise up and be upset.
Then people here wonder why, India, China, much of Asia and Africa aren't following the western lead.
Do you people know how many countries there are? 195 do you know how many are following sanctions? Just slightly over 30!
So the notion the world is united is very much false.
Wiki has a nice map showing the counties enforcing sanctions go look see that in Africa one little place, ME no one, South America nearly zero, Asia only Japan ( well South Korea but they are only doing the bare minimum not to upset the USA).
Can we please stop this fantasy that the world is on board, stuff, the White world is the rest aren't.

Nice one. Sakhalin 1 & 2 was basically intended to diversify the source away from being heavily dependent on such middle east nations as such a resource-scarce country like Japan. Do you want to be a complete bystander playing three monkeys despite watching rapes/violence going on just right in front? Stop naive posting. If Japan as a member of G7, the 3rd largest economy forced to contribute to UN, keeps behaving like three monkeys, this JT discussion board would be completely at opposite stance disgusting Japan.
Heck, those who endlessly accuse Japan of the number of refugees/Ukrainians accepted as not enough, or of what you claim as Japan's past historical war crimes even now, insist NOT TO GET INVOLVED AS IT'S NONE OF ITS BUSINESS?
Antiquesaving
Ok so instead we buy our gas and oil from nice Democracies like Saudi Arabia, right? I mean they would never bomb and destroy their neighbours killing hundreds of thousands. ( Sarcasm off)
fallaffel
It is good you don't need to make these kinds of decisions then. I think it has to do with making a few sacrifices in the short term to discourage more "special operations" from occurring across the world. Japan has been loud and clear about this since the beginning.

Time to fight dirty, shut down those 4 Japan Tobacco factories in Russia

Because innocent people are raped and massacred by Russians. and Japan does share the national border with this empire run by a mad dictator
Alan Harrison
I think that Japan is reaching a crossroads which will be historical. Japan just cannot have it's cake and eat it forever.

Somethings in what not he is saying. We will find the shortfall on spot market. Ok when would you not look for a long term contact ? Because they are still in deny. Thinking time will sort out the problem. Fossil fuel are only going to keep getting most expensive. We are 7 years away from the EU civil car owner to use only EV on the EU road system. This 9% would not be the gas used for civil heating ??? Just go and lock in a contract at the best price to can get today.

This does NOT mean Japan is out of the project!
I think Putin is just throwing a little fit, or a warning at Japan for attending the NATO meeting.
El Rata
In that case why did Japan, or the rest of the world for that matter, get involved in Ukraine. I still don't understand why we care about that conflict.

Japan needs some TMSR nuclear solutions for power generation. Also known as "LFSR".
Ref: https://www.thmsr.com/en/overview/
These are safe to the point that every safety system can fail and there is no explosion, no release of radiation. There's no high pressure involved. No radioactive water. Chemically the radioactive stuff binds into crystals which are cleaned up like picking up dry dog food. A robot can do this, once the pile cools in a week. Plus, Thorium reactors can use spent Uranium fuel with the waste output reduced by about 93% and radiation storage changed from millions of years to a few hundred.

OK for those going on and essentially bashing or laughing at Japan.
For those going " Japan should have gotten out when the other western countries did.
When you read something make sure you got all the information correctly:
Read correctly!
It doesn't say they sold or got out, it says She'll said it planed to sell.
But She'll didn't, not yet, it was in talks but now may have to just walk away losing $4 billion.
https://amp.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/01/shell-may-have-to-abandon-3bn-investment-in-russian-gasfield
Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne
It's too late to announce that.
If Japan conducted It's own mining and developed its own resources there would be nothing to whine about.
However rushing to start up old decaying nuclear reactors precariously located on volcanic fault lines all over Japan is stupendous.
I hope Japan has its cyber defense up to snuff as those energy plants may be a target due to rattling Putins cage and irritating China.
kennyG
Start counting how much of Russian assets Japan has now under its control, for potential requisition in near future. Start from Its JPY account with BOJ. Unlike other Asian countries, you made up your mind for the right things to do.

The Russian move comes with Japan sweltering through a heatwave that has stretched power capacity
The picture looks like it could be from "Stranger Things".
And perversely, in its upside down way, the government continues to just subsidize oil and power companies.
Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne
Classic Japanese .
Might want to examine why the lack of linear thought is so prevalent.
No use crying over spilled milk !

The Russians are going to liquidate, pardon the pun, Japan’s ownership stake just like it did with Gasprom.
And no company should invest capital again as long as Putin and his gang of thugs are in power.
Idiots. They cut off their genitalia to spite their bodies.
Antiquesaving
The article says "committed to sell"
They didn't yet, so Shell is in the exact same position at the moment.
No Russian company will buy their shares because Putin will just give it to them.
OssanAmerica
Mitsui Bussan and Mitsubushi Shoji should already have been following the lead of Royal Dutch Shell. Sell off the interests and get out. Russia simply can not be trusted on any level. Looking for and developing alternate sources should have been a top J-gov priority since Feb. Granted, maybe they have.
Time for Japan to stop being lead by the Russian leash. Brng an action against Russia over the 4 islands stolen at the end of WWII after Japan declared surrender. If Russia won't respond, get a default judgement which will serve to justify anything that may or may not happen in the future. Russia has no intention of giving up any of these islands or signing a Peace Treaty with Japan. Japan needs to wake up and grasp what Russia under the Putin regime really is.

Thanks to its high technology on oil refining processes, Japan is actually a major "exporter" of energy products such as light oil. If utilizing them at home, Japan would be able to survive the energy crisis.
日本は軽油を海外に輸出している?!
https://power-hikaku.info/column/diesel.php
kurisupisu
....
And the reason for that is because the Japanese have failed to invest adequately in other power sources.

Maybe it's all just a regrettable misunderstanding.

Qatar's main Energy Export is exactly this, LNG
I suspect Japan will transfer all contracts to Qatar after this crap.

I have predicted that Japan will withdraw from this project anyway.
Prepare for a poor Japan that will experience regular power outages!

Ahead of schedule, the Oi plants will be reactivated for operation. A smart move. Many will follow suit.

Japan should first reactivate suspended nuclear power plants to minimize the impact. Many of them have been inspected and approved by the safety watchdog agency. Such a decision would contribute to decreasing the inflationary oil and gas prices, which would also hit the aggressor's fuel-driven economy.
The rising energy and commodity prices (or mere expectations of it) may lead to fatigue, cynicism and dissatisfaction about the war, polarizing public opinions. Russia is pleased, willing to take advantage of the situation.
gokai_wo_maneku
This is how Russia gets back at Japan and the rest of the world.

When there was the first oil crisis in 1973 Brazil has invested in the development of renewable fuel, as ethanol and increased the oil prospection, today Brazil is a larger producer of oil and biofuels, as ethanol and biodiesel. Japan has wisely been investing in Brazil by financing the projects of building water reservoirs, then to enable agriculture close to the water dams, railways, ports in the north of Brazil, (and Panama channel widening) So, Japan has long term strategies to not depend on hostile neighbors. India is also a strategic partner of Japan.
BigP
Kishida should and probably did see this coming.

You're too naive if you think you can impose sanctions on Russia and then expect the Russians to be nice to you.
GBR48
9% is not too much exposure for LNG. Japan can buy its way out of shortages. Putin was always going to sequestrate assets. Wise companies were first out the door with a fire sale. The West's response was weak and Putin will feel like he is in control now. He's just toying with US allies. Things will really kick off in the winter when he starts turning off the juice to the EU. I would expect the JP government will use this as an excuse to roll the dice again and turn on the nukes.
Alfie Noakes
It's remarkable that people could actually be surprised by Russia retaliating against Japan's massive array of sanctions. The only surprise is that it took them so long.
This is a godsend to the LDP-nuclear industry nexus which now has solid reasons to fire up all those crumbling nuclear power plants built on earthquake fault lines and return to stuffing each others pockets with billions of yen.
Axel
Its such a shame. This is a European problem. Why did Japan feel the need to get involved? Too late now but a real shame that Japan will pay for, for a long time.

What a joke.
Just wondering, how would Russia characterize its actions in Ukraine? "Friendly actions"?

If so, that's good news, but why after decades of relying on other nations for energy needs, only 'look into boosting', And why should Japan,Inc. be believed this time? They have dithered since the 1930s, when Japan started (got involved in) a war that almost destroyed the nation. Why in 2022 does Japan remain vulnerable, from an energy perspective, to answer that question start by looking at who(political party and corporations) has been running the country since the 1930s.
