While the survey may not have included Australia (it seems to be left off so many surveys!), my guess would be that Sydney would be up there too for expensive living.

With the gradual shift of manufacturing to other countries the long-term prospects for the Yen are not good. When Japan no longer makes anything that people want to buy what will be the point in holding Yen?

My investments are in dollars, and I will eventually need to change them to yen. I hope it goes back to 100 per dollar.

Don't count on it. Yen will stay no lower than 80 to the USD. Too many people selling the dollar.

The yen is strong now but I cant see this lasting at some point Japan is going to do a swan dive & the yen will plummet, I mean Japan is as bad off as Greece & Italy, yet here we are. The main difference is most debt is owned by locals, but even that isnt going to prevent reality from settling in here at some point.

Right now Japan is in a totally bizarre situation wrt the yens "strength", with J-companies fleeing at the rate they are at some point its going to get volitile, watch out there folks!

l always find it funny when Tokyo continually ends up as the most expensive city in the world; Its obvious the price testing doesnt happen anywhere outside of the Azabu/Aoyama/Roppongi area.

I think if i had a company sending one of my employees to Tokyo as an expat, i would do some research on rents/grocery prices, and send to live outside of the yamanote line. I make the same amount here in Japan as i did back in Sydney, yet i have much more money left over at the end of the month

An expat Minato-ward resident who ends up in Shitamachi..hilarity ensues.

I'm with NeoJamal - It's like saying "We got a great assignment for you in NYC, but you will live in a nice place up in the Bronx"

Don't forget that Russia is also in Asia and that Moscow has been the most expensive city for expats to live in for a long time.

What is unfortunate here, is that expats (by and large) receive a per diem payment for their daily expenses. So actually they might be a bit sore about the amount left over after they have used the per diem! Tough life?

Swings and roundabouts. Those getting paid in Dollars would have had it good while the Yen was weaker.

A bit of a silly idea really; living in another country, the company should at least give, or use some of your salary to provide you with a stipend in the currency of the country you are working in.

It has been, since a few years, almost an insult by accepting FELT ( foreign employees local terms ), these days, things are turning around, local terms & paid in local currency turns out to be an advantage !

I work in Tokyo but live down near the bases as I used to work on them. Cheap for rent and food. Sure wish I did not buy my place thought 15 years ago. Going to rent to base officers or teachers and have them cover the mortgage.

I have 7 years before I need to sell my dollars to yen and collect my US Social Security. I am sure the yen will be much weaker by then.
