While the regulators are at it, make damn sure that these carriers make their phones SIM free too! It's simply asinine to have to make the request, and in some cases have to pay for it too!

Agree. I've just realized that I'm locked into AU with my 6+. They say they can't unlock the 6+, but the 6S models can be unlocked. Thinking of sending it off to Singapore to get it unlocked.

Definetely one of the most profit hunting and one with the worst customer care service in japan.

Good news! It's a damn scam the way these contracts are set up to milk the consumer for every yen possible if they leave. That's why MVNO plans are so attractive for some!

Im softbank and simlock free for 2 years now and it feels GREAT! Their plans are scams and their customer service is abhorrent.

Even with the penalty for early leaving it was much cheaper to switch to MNVO ! I did it for my wife to find out she has to wait 6 months to unlock her 6s :(
Already few years free of the monopolists and breathing easier - MNVOs are very reliable now but there are many catches that still keep the vast majority tied to the big 3...
Anyway this is a step in the right direction - hope they get in line with the times and give more flexibility to the users!

Why is it that in a country with such high standards of consumer service, that Softbank are just awful? I hate having to go to Softbank for after-sales service and will avoid them as much as possible.
Can I ask - is this just a gaikokujin service thing? Are there any Japanese on here who also receive such awful service from Softbank?

You are being sucked in by an image. In the service related industries that image is probably well deserved, but multi-nationals and companies like these, no.
Folks seem to forget that not all that long ago when the regulations changed, these companies, particularly softbank, were offering huge sums of money to customers to come change over to their service.
Plenty did, only to get sucked into long-term contracts, like these. Just proves that there isn't anything free these days!
