KFC, Apple in China hit by South China Sea spat

Companies should pull out of this dump. A dump with lots of money but jingoistic idiots everywhere.

Don't give them market status and seriously consider booting them out of the WTO.

I was in Hangzhou, China, when the U.S. "accidently" bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in 1999. The windows at KFC were smashed and foreign students were beaten up.

The fact that KFC was locally owned and operated and the foreign students were all from Africa seemed to mean nothing.

lol, they'll all be running back to KFC when the next tainted chinese meat scandal rolls around.. in a month or two.

It's the CCP government hat started the practice of intermingling politics with economics., And it's the CCP government that has turned so many Chinese into hyper-nationalist fanatics. Not really sure if the government can stop what it has created over the last couple of decades.

It is hard to imagine something like this happening in a civilized country. I would think the Chinese government would be quicker to show the world that it does not condone this kind of thing.

Seriously. Has anyone ever ever heard of a Chinese restaurant in the US getting trashed because of something that happened in China? Ever? I think the answer is never. If China stopped doing this kind of stuff TODAY, the US would still be a century ahead of China on this scale of civility.

Also in May, a court ruled a Chinese company is allowed to use the iPhone trademark on bags, wallets and other leather goods.

Are you kidding me? How is the legal? Crazy China laws!?

I take it that China is not happy with the common practice of a 200 mile offshore limit for territorial claims. That is a problem. The current government of China is not ruled by an Imperial Dynasty, and China is no longer in the position of being able to just take what it wants. Recognizing the rights of the other countries in the area would be helpful. Among the countries with rights is China, but it is not the only country in East Asia.

Oh come now, you are comparing apples and oranges. It seems quite natural that with so many people being killed by Muslim terrorists there will be a reaction to such things and some misguided people will take the law into their own hands, seeing as how their government doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. But I cannot see what KFC or Apple have to do with the International Court of Arbitration shooting down China's bogus claim to the South China Sea. The fact is that the Chinese government has been feeding their people a pack of lies for many years and thus created fervent nationalism, much as Hitler did in Germany in the 1930's.

And you somehow failed to notice the LARGE percentage of Americans across all races and religions who find Trump's views offensive and are doing everything they can to keep this freak show out of the White House?

The Chinese are no longer "the sick men of Asia." They've been humiliated, mocked and occupied. . . but not anymore.

A Realist, China will simply ignore the ruling, just as the US ignored a similar Hague ruling against it's mining of Nicaraguan waters in the Caribbean, and just as it has ignored or not ratified dozens of UN conventions, including the U.N. Convention on Maritime Law. After all the Caribbean is a US pond, just as China sees the South China Sea as it's pond. The big difference is of course there aren't dozens of Chinese warships cruising the Caribbean or dozens of Chinese bases encircling the US or Chinese war-games held on the Mexican border every few months. China simply will not back down on this as it remembers well what happened to Japan when the US blockaded the South China Sea, or what happened to China when Japan controlled it. And keep in mind that Taiwan also rejected the Hague ruling as it was the Nationalist Government of China (now ruling Taiwan) who drew those lines in the South China Sea in 1947 (with Allied agreement) and the PRC has upheld them since 1949 (with Allied disagreement). And as for the Hitler comparison, Trump's xenophobic appeal to the disenfranchised American middle class; blaming many of their woes on Mexicans and muslims, is very similar to Hitler's rise by blaming the Jews for Germany's problems in the 1930's. I honestly feel that's a much closer comparison. Apples and Oranges? I'm not so sure.
