Kitajima gets his hands on Quarter Pounder

Olympic champion swimmer Kosuke Kitajima was on hand Wednesday to announce McDonald's Japan’s new burger, the Quarter Pounder. “It’s really good,” Kitajima said with a satisfied look on his face.

The Quarter Pounder will go on sale Friday at around 1,200 McDonald's Restaurants in the Kanto area and Kumamoto Prefecture. McDonald's Japan plans to increase its availability nationwide at a later date.

The Quarter Pounder contains roughly 110 grams of beef pattie before cooking, about 2 1/2 times that of its cheeseburgers. The Quarter Pounder with cheese will sell for 350–360 yen, and the Double Quarter Pounder with cheese will sell for 480-490 yen.

The Quarter Pounder was introduced in the U.S. in 1971 and has been sold nationally since 1973, and along with the Big Mac, is one of the company's signature products.

Rather surprised it took this long to make use of the Olympic swimmer's medal to promote products and make money! (Michael Phelps was in the media as soon as he finished his last swim!) He was great at the Olympics!

Any idea if the beef in the patty is Japanese beef or US beef?

Wow, how totally convincing!

I agree with Sarge. Oh yes, i often partake in consuming a Quarter Pounder in the evening.

I prefer mine with just onions. I suppose it shows that Japanese are also eating bigger portions and are joining the world obesity problem.

Gawd, in Britain hamburgers was made out of ham when they first come out, because people didn't realise they wqs made of beef.

Actually there are 2 stores in Tokyo that sell nothing but Quarter Pounder and double Quarter Pounder sets. They aren't branded as McDonalds, but simply QUARTER POUNDER.

Aussie Beef! American beef is better. They got to start importing it again.

Whoa! A Quarter Pounder with cheese contains 490 calories, 26 grams of fat and 940 mg of salt!

They don't have it at my local shop.

1973 it started and only took Japan 35 years to add it to the menu in 1 store.

Interesting.

It would be interesting to compare that to KFC chicken. I'm guessing the burger is healthier than the fried chicken.

Is this seriously news?

It took 35 years to get a quarter pounder here? Seriously, who cares about this sort of thing? There are way better things to eat in almost any dark corner of Asia.

Well, my country uses the metric system too and we know why it's a quarter pounder. Sarge seems to be amused by his own sentence, which makes me a little sad :*(

Have you seen the massive portions that young Japanese people eat? And yet...and yet they aren't as many fat people as in other places.

“It’s really good,” Kitajima said with a satisfied look on his face.

At that moment the swimmer was transformed into the best satisfactionist, the new super tarento of Japan. Lets go fun time McDonalds!

I have to admit, I do love the Quarter Pounder! brb...McDonalds.

Foreign demand was so great McDonalds Japan had no choice!

I hit the local Mac about twice a month for takeout coffee or a quick burger.

The place is always packed with homesick gaijin. Judging from the backpacks and the accents it's Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders mostly.

It would be interesting to compare that to KFC chicken. I'm guessing the burger is healthier than the fried chicken.

According to the info put out by KFC, an original recipe drumstick (serving size 53 gm) has 110 cals, 7 gm fat and 310 mg sodium; an EC(?) chicken breast (serving size 169 gm) has 460 cals, 28 gm fat and 1000mg sodium. They claim 0 gm trans fats for all the chicken.

Chicken and burger both contain terminally dead meat.

I remember back in 1983, on my first trip to Japan, I wandered into McDonalds after a year in Taiwan where there was, as yet, no Golden Arches. But I was taken aback because everyone was eating Big Macs at 8AM. They had no breakfast menu! That weirded me out, and I left to seek breakfast elsewhere.

If you're traveling, price will be one factor in deciding whether to dine at McDonalds. It's cheap relative to the alternatives in Hong Kong, hence I've probably eaten more at McDonalds more there than in the USA where it's really a last resort.

But not Kansai? Hey Burger King! Here's your chance. Quick! Open several shops in Osaka before McDonald's brings their quarter pounder down here.

"You know what they call a Quarter Pounder in Europe? A Royale with cheese." I just HAD to say that. How often does a chance like this come?

Chicken and burger both contain terminally dead meat.

Great isn't it. Off to go get some terminally dead meat now for dinner.

"Best Beefist", anyone up for the title? We only have one, so congratulations to Kitajima!!

interesting that it is still called a "quarter pounder", in a country which uses the metric system. i think "cheezu yokozuna ba-ga-" would've been a better name.

Cleo - According to your info, a Quarter Pounder with cheese and a KFC chicken breast have nearly the same calories, salt and fat! Unbelievable!I think I'll get a Quarter Pounder without the cheese... I'll balance that with a good helping of spinach though.

eat this.. forget about the olympics.

Pulp Fiction. Yeah, it certainly dates me, but it's a great movie. Watch it. Then all those "Royal with Cheese" type comments will not go right over your head (ANOTSUSAGAMI et al, at least I appreciated your humor).

Personally, I think the "yon-bun no ichi paunda" sound better...

Because as we know, you need to eat quarter pounders if you want to get an Olympic medal....

Give me good old Kiwi Burgerfuel (one of their veggie or vegan burgers, for preference - totally Cleo-friendly) any day!

terminally dead meat

Is there other states of being dead? But it would make for an interesting and somewhat more accurate discription of what you are ordering at a McDonalds; Yes, I would like to order a terminal dead McChicken burger and god help you if it is only quasi-dead like last time.

The Quarter Pounder is kind of a step down though, the last thing I remember being released by McDonald's(at least in Hokkaido) was the Mega Big Mac which had 4 beef patty's that made you break-out in meat sweets and have a sudden fear of being trampled by the waistband-challenged.

I went to McDonald's this morning to get a hotcakes and a coffee but by the time I got there it was 10:31 and since I'm not Jack Bauer and can't get breakfast at McDonald's after 10:30 I had a Quarter Pounder without cheese. Not bad! But I can get three regular hamburgers for 60 yen less.
