Lawson to expand in Myanmar

Convenience store chain operator Lawson has announced plans to enter the Myanmar market. It will be the first foray into that country by a Japanese convenience store operator.

Lawson said a business development team will visit Yangon next week to work on a plan with leading retail companies in Myanmar, with an eye to opening the first store in Yangon this year and 100 stores throughout the country within three years, according to the Sankei Shimbun.

As democratic reforms take place in Myanmar, the country is expected to become a lucrative market. Lawson said the initial plan is support local entrepreneurs by making the stores franchised.

Analysts say that while the other major convenience store companies such as Seven Eleven and FamilyMart have achieved expansion overseas, Lawson is trying hard to catch up by searching for untapped markets, such as Myanmar, Sankei reported.

Have to think inexpensive Japanese food and beer will be a big success in Myanmar.

Dunno about inexpensive, paul! I reckon a can of Super Dry would set back the average Burmese about 2 weeks salary! Maybe it will be aimed for the Japanese expat, however...

Agreed. Convenience and destruction of mom+pop shops is not what they need. They need an infusion of light industry and assembly operations. Things like dish-making, tool-making (light tools like wrenches, shovels, knives, etc.) putting motorbikes together, mfg bikes and so on. Something to get them jump-started into industrialization and away from subsistence farming and penury.

A little backwards thinking, are we?

@m5c32 and @darkbob, It's hardly our place to say HOW that country should develop or what industy or business is best for it. Whatever we might think about the modernization of Burma and the move by Lawson to go there, I believe it's a good move, business wise. To be there BEFORE anyone else is clever...

And why the hell would they sell Japanese products? Because it's a Japanese company? If they're smart, they will cater to the local market.
