Have a look at this table. It paints a very sad picture for the MRJ. Late to market, and supposedly twice the cost of of a CRJ900.

You don't understand what the regional jet market is

I should have been clearer.

Trying to introduce a 'jet' into a regional market without offering efficiency incentives over the current incumbents (turbo prop) is doomed to fail. Regional routes are flown on a dime.

With regards to the regional jet limitations etc., IMHO, it will get much more complicated than is currently once landing slots at major hubs are saturated. Southwest in the US is already making p2p work (ie avoiding hubs).

IMO, the reason why Airbus and Boeing are not in the game is because of the airport congestion conundrum, together with the efficiency challenge. Any new regional jet, has to beat the incumbents on most metrics if it's to suceed.

@Samit, Airbus only bought the CSeries from BBD, which it calls the A-220. BBD’s CRJ program was actually bought by Mitsubishi.

Boeing paid $4.2 billion for Brazil's Embraer passenger jet division. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, spent $8 billion and has nothing to show for it. Go figure.

6th time delivery has been postponed. Can Mitsubishi ever get this job done? Give it to Carlos Ghosn and he will deliver.

@Shimon M4sada

Regional jet, but can't take off land at as many airport as the Dash 8.

You don't understand what the regional jet market is.

This is a US specific market, where there is a limitation imposed on the passenger capacity(78) and aircraft take off weight(40 tons) on aircraft operated by regional airlines that operate with major airlines by the pilot's union. This restriction was imposed so that major airlines do not divert passengers to their regional airline subsidiaries. Think of it as the kei car of the airliner industry.

The regional jets were getting old and there were no competing models from Airbus and Boeing, so Mitsubishi decided to enter this market by 2013 with MRJ. Unfortunately, the MRJ kept getting delayed and during this time Airbus took over Bombardier and Boeing taking over Embraer, so now there are regional jet competitors from Airbus and Boeing now and Mitsubishi MRJ is pretty much finished in the US.

"This will be the sixth time that the company has pushed back delivery of the SpaceJet M90 small passenger aircraft to launch customer All Nippon Airways Co."

Made in Japan used to mean something.

Is this thing every going to reach the market?

Niwa, with long engineering and aviation business experience, will replace Hisakazu Mizutani, who will become chairman to oversee governance matters and relationships with All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines Co, it said.

This sounds like a window-seat job.

ANA: So, Niwa-san, are we really getting our jets this year?

Niwa: (sucking air though teeth). Sou desu ne... Can you give us another year or so?

ANA: (Seethes politely)

The delays have already raised the development cost for the passenger jet to an estimated 800 billion yen ($7.3 billion).

Yes... i lost money already. Gimme a refund already!

Delay No 6?

Niwa, with long engineering and aviation business experience, will replace Hisakazu Mizutani, who will become chairman to oversee governance matters and relationships with All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines Co, it said.

Niwa - on the production line? Hasn't worked with airplanes for a long time...

Mizutani - looking for customers - these two may be the only ones?

Can we go ahead and call this the "Galapagos Jet"? I can't imagine many non-Japanese airlines are eager to have this plane if or when it is ever delivered.

Business case?

Regional jet, but can't take off land at as many airport as the Dash 8.

Marginally more inefficient than Dash 8, when it has to be better...regional travel is cost sensitive.

The only advantage I can see is speed...
