In other words... it's never going to get finished, or if it is it'll be hugely overbudget and underperforming. The only airlines that'll buy it will be Japanese airlines, and they'll be kept to small inside Japan flights only.

@David Varnes

it's never going to get finished

Oh, it will get finished, it is just that the MRJ will never recoup its investment as the breakeven number is 1000 units now. Japan's taxpayer development fund flushed down the toilet.

@garymalmgren

In other words.... when it is finally released it will be absolutely safe and a desirable airplane for those in the market for mid-range flights.

The MRJ is already made obsolete by Embraer's 175-E2 jet.

The article misuses the phrase "redesigned jetliner", This is not a rehash of a previous design, as Mistubishi has produced no aircraft in this catagory before.

The current version is MRJ Mk2. The MRJ Mk1 was designed entirely in Japan with Mitsubishi's interpretation of FAA rule book and without an external help, and was thrown out when it couldn't meet the FAA regulations. The current jet is known as the MRJ Mk2, which is being redesigned by former Bombardier engineers.

So... basically initial deliveries will be least 8 years past its original initial delivery date.

I don't how anyone frames this or the reasons for the delay, this is an utter and complete fail by Mitsubishi. They will never recoup their investment in this plane and I would venture to say that this will be their first and last commercial jet produced.

I would say that Mitsubishi should be in a full-blown panic over this, but they're probably dealing with tons of free government money here, so it doesn't really matter to them if or when the plane is actually released to the public.

@Samit Basu

IMHO, the same engineers and execs that took Bombardier down and now working for Mitsubishi is going to take Mitsubishi down, and probably in the same ways.

You could guess that because of Boeing's ongoing troubles

Mitsubishi has been delaying orders long before "Boeing's ongoing troubles."

Therefore problems are to be expected. That is pretty well what Boeing has said about their difficulties.

You could guess that because of Boeing's ongoing troubles, Mitsubishi is just making sure the plane is safe.

Exactly. The 737 max was on time and look what happened. It is better to take your time and get it right, rather then push product into the market when its not ready.

Boeing should learn from Mitsubishi.
