If you could read about the forum, the subject is about gas milage.

Had me fooled. I thought the subject was corporate ethics.

Where to start? I have owned several Mitsubishi vehicles and every one of them has been better than any American car I ever owned. Service has been great too. No complaints. Mitsubishi generally uses older technologies and builds pretty utilitarian stuff.

Mileage? Hmm. I generally hypermile, so although I pay attention to it, I use estimates and ratings as more of a ballpark guideline than anything. People generally do not drive skillfully or with any attention to their bad habits, so their mileage, well, let's just say that most people will complain about the mote in Mitsubishi's eye and ignore the beam in their own.

So although I am glad that regulators are keeping an eye on this, I can't ignore the nitpickiness of society. Here we are quibbling about a few kilometers per liter more or less while overall quality has progressed by leaps and bounds in the last generation. Safety, reliability, fuel efficiency, emissions.... all performance criteria trends are going straight up.

People? They haven't progressed much at all.

Where are the P E N A L T I E S ??

You would have thought Mitsubishi would have learnt with the scandal about them covering up recall problems with the Pajero ten years ago. Basically the company mustn't give a monkeys at corporate level.

Though they don't have dedicated defeat devices like the VWs, apparently the only Japanese diesels that got anywhere near Japanese compliance in real world tests were the Mazdas. The Toyota HiAce, the Nissan "clean diesel" X Trail and the Mitsubishi Delica were all well over. Air pollution from NOx and PM is nasty stuff. It puts sensitive people in hospital.

This must be wrong The japanese would never lie thats only other countrries And in breaking news the Guardian have said that the French police have discovered fraudulent payments linked to the Olympics bid!! Next you will be saying Omotenashi is a scam and Becky is not a good girl.Where did it all go wrong!!!!!

bullfighterMAY. 12, 2016 - 12:46PM JST So, falsification of pollution data is OK but falsification of gas mileage data is not? In both cases the companies falsified data. Are you exempting the Germans because they're white and dumping on the Japanese because they are not? And, if you'd take the trouble to research a bit before responding, you'd find that VW has also said that fuel consumption data may have been fudged.

If you could read about the forum, the subject is about gas milage. Why don't you compare 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid at EPA 47mpg, but real word what is the milage per gallon? More than 25 percent off? And nobody said nothing? Is this a fabrication? Look at the facts, 2.3 engine, hybrid getting 47 mpg? Where is the evidence?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Wonder why? It's a different subject in this forum. We are not talking about pollution versus gas milage.

As far those compiling lists of Japanese companies involved in scandals in order to prove something about Japan and the Japanese, I would point out that it is easy enough to compile a list of scandals involving major US companies starting with General Motors and major US financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs and continuing on through restaurant chains and food processing companies.

There is a word for people who continually find fault with one ethnic or national group while ignoring the faults of their own ethnic or national group. I'll leave it to others to state what that word is.

The latest scandal surfaced last month after Nissan pointed out discrepancies with its own mileage test

And Nissan is turning out to be the potential white knight here coming into purchase shares in Mitsubishi it appears.

First report a problem with a competitor and then go on and save the same company?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The company said the extent of such fraudulence was wide,

I would rather appreciate to hear a prosecutor saying this at a trial.

Bob Sneider MAY. 12, 2016 - 11:05AM JST uhh Mitsubishi, Takata (airbags) Sony (rootkit, privacy leak, hack) Toshiba (accounting, Fujitsu/NEC (bid rigging), construction companies with their pile drivers, Honda (takata coverup), Toyota (sudden acceleration death, floormats), Olympus (accounting), TEPCO (covering up risks) livedoor (fradulent share prices), not to mention the dozens of Japanese companies implicated for price fixing every year. These are the major companies people associate with Japan, and was responsible for Japan's rise in power, built on scandals.

Which is doing better than Japan? China?

Ok, now list all the companies that haven't been empbroiled in scandal.

Shouldn't take you more than a month or two to collect them all.

The statement was ridiculous.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

All manufacturers should be investigated for their methods and test procedures, period! I don't care if Mitsubishi falsified test results if they were close to real use scenario (unfortunately they were not). In the same time I am furious of specifications that are not even closely representing real use no matter how correctly tests they had! There should be unification - we need 2 numbers - town and long trip. If the owner sees more than 10% difference should be able the file a consumer complain and get repair or refund individually!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What a ridiculous comment. The extreme majority of Japanese companies have had no scandal.

@Strangerland

It is the same cheating company (just add heavy in front) which is involved into Nuclear Plant construction, if they are doing systematic falsification on cars test report, who knows what else they can fabricate, Since they are an heavy bone of the LDO there will be no prosecution, they are above the law here despite victims being all the Japanese consumers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@strangerland: yeah if you include ALL the companies in Japan, but lets check some facts shall we?

mitsubishi - fuel cycle scandal, asahikasei - building plans, toyorubbers - earthquake rubbers, sharp - cooking the books, takata - airbags, toshiba - accounting scandal, olympus - cooking books, kanebo - books, nikko - books, I could go on.

It's time Japan, kicks out and punishes these frauds and clean up the system.

bullfighte rMAY. 12, 2016 - 10:38AM JST I'm surprised no one has mentioned VW.

Wonder why? It's a different subject in this forum. We are not talking about pollution versus gas milage.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Just business as usual for the zaibatsu of Japan.

Archaic term. Not relevant to contemporary Japan although it has some applicability to Korea, Thailand, India, etc.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned VW. As just about everyone in this venue knows, we Japanese are imitators. We cannot even think up scams by ourselves. I'm sure Mitsubishi got the idea from VW, a western company run by westerners who are so much more clever than we Japanese.

Incidentally, according to the NHK morning news, Mitsubishi Motors is now "under the umbrella" of Nissan (aka Renault). So, if you bash Mitsubishi Motors from here on, you will be bashing a French company (in effect).

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Oh, no. They're so done this time.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

WeiWei MAY. 12, 2016 - 10:16AM JST This scandal is about Mitsubishi falsifying the TEST CYCLE results.

How can you say that? On a vehicle, same engine, same transmission, similar weight? For few years? Problem is that test cycle spec results are not that much different than all other manufacturers that produce same vehicle for number of years. It's more of a politics.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It seems people don't understand what the company is saying. This scandal is NOT about real world vs test cycle - results! (Every car in the world fails this, as the lab conditions are always optimal). This scandal is about Mitsubishi falsifying the TEST CYCLE results. Yes, even the LAB results were too bad to be published.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Reckless MAY. 12, 2016 - 10:03AM JST this is prevalent in large JP companies because there is lack of accountability.

What is accountability. Publicly released fuel-economy numbers were off by between 5% and 10%, Mitsubishi executives said. How much is Toyota, Nissan, or Honda off by? Are they exact?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Robert DykesMAY. 12, 2016 - 08:38AM JST And I will not be buying from Mitsubishi now.... oh wait! They didn't have any decent cars to being with. Never mind.

Let me know which manufacturer in Japan gets exactly the same milage in the real world as advertised. Let me know what Toyota, Nissan, or Honda advertises and what the real world is. Mitsubishi is no different than other manufacturer.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

You said it sighclops

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Its just a matter of time before a safety ratings scandal is exposed

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Just business as usual for the zaibatsu of Japan. I bet if they started digging into their trading & construction arms (to name a few), they'd find some real gems!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

DisillusionedMAY. 12, 2016 - 07:41AM JSTThis is a major corporate fraud on a massive scale.

Let me know any cars manufactured in the world that matches the EPA milage to the real world. Most manufacturers are off more than 10-20 percent in a real world fuel consumption. Compare 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid: EPA 47mpg, but real word? More than 25 percent less milage? And nobody said nothing? Double standard?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

japanese companies have become synonymous with scandal at this point

What a ridiculous comment. The extreme majority of Japanese companies have had no scandal.

is there a single Japanese company I can feel good about suppprting?

When you equate a few scandals to mean that all companies are bad, then probably not. But that's on you, not Japanese companies.

I was think about buying one of those Delicas now that I have two children, but with this news I'll pass. I worked for Mitsubishi as a mechanic in the States, being that they were owned by Chrysler at the time (maybe they still are), we rarely had any defects to deal with. Just a lot of normal maintenance.

I doubt Mitsubishi is going anywhere though seeing as they Mitsubishi also has Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

of course, is this any surprise?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

And I will not be buying from Mitsubishi now.... oh wait! They didn't have any decent cars to being with. Never mind.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

I only know one person to have bought a Mistsubishi here and she kept crashing it.....

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It will be interesting to see what kind of punishment they receive, of any, besides another mass recall of Japanese cars. This is a major corporate fraud on a massive scale. I remember some 30 odd years ago when Mitsubishi cars started falling apart and they just got worse. They were the first of the Japanese car manufacturers to close down in Australia 20 odd years ago because people just stopped buying them. Mitsubishi trucks were also garbage and nobody was buying them because the brakes kept failing. Bye bye Mitsubishi cars!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Japanese way of saying ALL.....

4 ( +7 / -3 )

There is talk that Nissan is buying a large part of Mitsubishi Motors.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

My Honda, bought in the US, gets about 12% BETTER mileage than what Honda reports to the U.S. EPA.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The company said the extent of such fraudulence was wide, possibly affecting all current and discontinued models sold in Japan.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

It abided by mileage-test requirements for vehicles sold abroad.

Where they can't get away with it.
