building/designing a new plane and the competition from rivals is much harder than they anticipated.

Better safe than sorry! It's not easy buildings from scratch a sophisticated airliner without any real experience in the field! They probably looked at the problems Boeing had with the 787 when they rushed that out to meet deadlines, and didn't want a similar situation with the MRJ! Where as Boeing could absorb the negativity, Mitsubishi in all likelyhood would struggle to do the same!

Exactly. So any discerning customer would not be buying them until they have been flying for at least 10 years. Unless there were other "incentives".
