More Japanese wives in workforce despite husbands' high income

Lets set the record straight.

When you begin to have children you realise at the childs age of 2 that the wife could do with a break and the child could do with daily activity. If you want your child to attend a local prefecture hoikouen nursery school, then the wife has to be in employment.

This benefits the government 'mothers in work' stats, and it benefits the wifes employer who can pay peanuts. The wife is content to work for peanuts because it doesnt affect her husbands taxable income, and she needs the employment for the childs nursery place.

You can't draw a conclusion from this data that the husbands are "high earners".

Any household with income over 10mil yen could very easily have the woman as the major earner, and two people making 5mil yen each are hardly high earners.

Interesting.... what is the percentage of married Japanese men making Y10 million or more a year? It is hard to find real figures on household income in Japan. My guess would be that about 3% of Japan's married men make more than Y10 mil a year.

This article has a bit of a passive aggressiveness about it; women working more even though they are from high earning households. It sort of gives off the feeling that they shouldn't be in the workforce. Coming from Kyodo I guess this is to be expected?

Another Kyodo article that takes an interesting topic, throws out interesting and not particularly interesting data (why the data and headline on the very small % of households over 10M yen and assumption that the wife can't be a teacher, doctor, or pharmacist earning over half that?) , and draws some questionable and seemingly pre-ordained conclusions without any reasoning to back such conclusions up.

Its good for Japanese women to be more active and there are still a lot of barriers to it. Things are getting better, but only very slowly.

Good that more women are choosing to work instead of being parasites at home. Helps the economy, helps the kids (less helicopter mothers) and helps the moms too to have more in their lives than to live through their kids only.

This article seems straight out of the 1950s in most countries just with updated figures.

I agree with you. I never understood husbands who force their wife to stay home in this day and age. The desire should be left up to the woman.

Perhaps they realized that having the wife at home brings more troubles. Imagine how many acres of thoughts a woman can yield left alone for a day.

Fully agree here. The woman should work because she wants to have a career and then should eventually enjoy it. Working so that kids can go to local kaikouen or saving tax etc.... can just end up in undesirable attitude at work and give her employer grief.

High Income ? Most people work because, they have to in order to Live and pay for their Kids education, etc.

Not 'despite'. 'instead'. High income people usually are highly educated with highly educated wives itchy to go back to work to use their ability.
