They didn't mention this during their heartfelt apologies yesterday did they?

It's fraud, on a massive scale. As I said yesterday, the people who knew about it should be arrested and prosecuted.

they did, but no problem (if required) they will appear again in front of cameras.

This kind of stuff applies to all makers and also other products (camera batteries, etc., etc.) Unless it is exactly specified what is Government testing and Mitsubishi testing there is no way for us to judge the difference in the results. All it matters for the makers is to provide the methodology together with their numbers. If tests with the exact same methodology repeatedly differ by more than certain % then they should be find liable!

Most educated costumers have learned not to trust the maker's numbers anyway so in some extend I wonder for this 'attack' on Mitsubishi (not trying to acquit them).

The company had claimed the car traveled 180 kilometers (112 miles) on a single charge, but it actually went just 172 kilometers (107 miles) under government testing

Ok, but that is a very small discrepancy and that could be attributed to a whole bunch of different things ie. driving style, radio on or off etc.

Electric car testing requires a set configuration of the electronics in the car. That said, things the testers cannot control could result in small changes in mileage... the most obvious being density altitude. Density Altitude is atmospheric pressure at the altitude tested modified by air temperature and (to a lesser extent) humidity will affect the drag the air imparts against the vehicle. Cooler air = denser air = more drag. Higher humidity = denser air = more drag.

If I wanted to skew my car mileage rating to be better, I would conduct the tests at a relatively high altitude during a hot day with little humidity. If I wanted to get a "worst-case" mileage, I would test at sea-level with the outside temperature at 33°C and relative humidity at 98%. The car having to push through thicker air would lower the MPG/MPCharge.

It's all very well for people to demonize Japan over vehicle mileages, Mail Online UK has just published a list of other manufacturer's cars with mileage differences. So, this matter does not just relate to Japan. I wouldn't say that these mileages are really fraudulent as it depends on the testing criterea which differs between manufacturers and countries.

Vehicles are mostly tested under optimum conditions which don't really relate to real time driving in traffic, uphills, against wind, no extra luggage carried, air con off, correct tyre pressures, windows closed etc. All these things affect economy.
