President Masato Matsuura... defended the company's labor practices,

Yeah, I bet he did. After all, overworking employees and then not paying them is a great way of maximizing shareholder returns, not to mention lining his own pockets.

"Music label Avex failed to pay hundreds of millions of yen in overtime"

In other words, standard operating procedure for Japan Inc.

This is blatantly pathetic and people behind it must be punished by the Japanese justice entity, if there is still one.

8 months? They haven't been paying it for 30 years!

These appalling levels of corporate greed  are crying out for examples to be made.

Punitive fines with corporate boards held criminally accountable. The entertainment industry and it vulture talent agencies are ripe for a public naming and shaming through public inquires.

Avex company President Masato Matsuura and the board is directly accountable for negligently failing to honor contracted overtime payments. Corporate responsibilities must be seen to be vigorously enforced. Fraudulent failure to record overtime is commiserate with criminal acts of tax and national social payments evasion. Lock them up.

Avex's internal investigation has found that while overwork was common at the operations, only a portion of overtime wages were paid.

Waiting for the corporatocra-tists (sic), greed is good-ers(sic) and proponents of trickle-down to explain how this level of worker exploitation is in some way beneficial. Watching what's happening in Japan, Russia and the US among other places, it's pretty hard not to think world powers are ready to ditch democracy and replace it with some form of oligarchy.

Not being paid for ones labor is slavery.......

They never failed

They were aware of it

Too much pressure put on Japanese companies to pay overtime will result in less competitive business. Employees must understand that it is in their best interest not to claim overtime. We Japanese need to work hard and show our loyalty to our employers.

Jeff Lee, This is epidemic in Japan with not just small companies but large Japanese corporation e.g.(Denshi & Avex) and Multi National which I know of personally, are tainted with slave labor. Let not kid ourselves. A continuation or a culture of unpaid work is slave labor. This allows these companies to enlarge their forecast Margin and profit sheet legally which drives up share prices, This make a lot of share over value hence the Nikki is over value. If the Government really cracks down on slave labour this will effect the Nikki and trade dealing with over Countries. It really is a problem Japan has made for themselves and if more evidence keep coming out, it will not take much for investor to realise there portfolio are overvalued and will start to sell of and invest in property most likely over seas.

Sure, Japanese employees should work hard and and all that, but WITH adequate pay that comes with it! In their best interest to not claim overtime...give me a break. You're just following along with illegal corporate greed. You should be ashamed of yourself. Doing something illegal over a long period of time doesn't make it okay, and if those poor little greedy Japanese companies will suffer from lower profis, then they should have thought of that before they decided that not paying staff for worked hours! Like they say in your language, jigojitoku desu.

But our way which you see as "greed" also gives us the comfort of knowing that we will have a job tomorrow unlike in other countries where employees can so easily be dismissed overnight. As a Japanese I have a responsibility to my wife and children to maintain a stable job until retirement. I must not lose face. Being made redundant is a much far worse situation than not being paid overtime.

And yet this same company calls kids who download music thieves Kids, when you buy your DVDs, this is who the money goes to. The artists are lucky to see a tiny percentage of it.

What you accuse me of calling greedy are things that are stipulated in laws, which means that it's illegal if they are not upheld.

And yet, it has been proven time and time again that Japan loses to other nations when it comes to productivity. People who are unproductive still keep their jobs because they know the company won't sack them. If there was a higher risk of seishain losing their jobs, I guarantee you that competition and thus productivity would be higher, instead of what exists in Japan today.

I need slaves for my enjoyable life where I can decide what I want during my holidays.

I met plenty of Japanese thinking this way.

If willing to be slaves, so be it !

For me Japan is paradise for tourists, ie super high quality of services and low prices outside GW/Obon/End of year.

For work, it is hell but they don't know.

Check the allegory of the cavern, from Plato.

Education is all !
