A new 34-floor commercial complex called Shibuya Hikarie opened Thursday near Shibuya station. The building is connected directly to Shibuya JR and subway stations.
The top level of the building will be business offices, the middle level has event halls and a theater, while the bottom level is a shopping mall called ShinQs, targeting career women in their late 20s to 40s.
B3 and B2 floors are food sections. B1 and 1st floor is devoted to high-end cosmetics, as well as other beauty products and services. It will be the biggest outlet for natural and organic products in Tokyo.
The 2nd to 4th floors are for apparel and fashion goods, including casual office wear, travel & outdoor fashion, urban styles, and fashionable design goods.
The 5th floor is a lifestyle goods section for the living room, kitchen, dining, and for hobbies and culture.
The building has luxury powder rooms which are called Switch Lounges for members only.
The Tokyu Theatre Orb on the 11th-16th floors opens with the musical "West Side Story" on July 18.

Can expect few more such tall structures since BOJ has eased monetary policy further.

Very nice building.

There's no shortage of mixed use projects such as this in Tokyo and they just keep coming. Amazing

How does Japan support all of these new shopping complexes going up all of the time? With the economy and a shrinking young population, the government had better work on attracting more tourists from overseas -- and making the country more "gaijin"-friendly... Not just for the sake of these businesses either, but for Japan's future...

That's because we keep hearing generalisations all the time. For example, "Japan has been surpassed by China and therefore all is lost". A lot of countries are in the same boat - how many countries can you name that are doing better then China? Number 1 economy America? Living standards are better to be sure but they lose out with regards to the kind of manufacture that China excels at (don't confuse "excel" with high technology or good quality goods. At the same time, the Chinese are much smarter than people give them credit for)
Tourism alone won't "save" Japan. It would help the Tourism industry but not the economy overall. The same fallacy was swallowed hook, line and sinker where I live too. Most people are unaffected either way. Only a small number of people really benefit from the Tourism industry.
Gaijin friendly? Japan IS gaijin friendly. Do you think immigrating to other countries is easier? As for "has to", my countried is absolutely swamped with foreigners. There's very little benefit to the locals, in fact, lifes is much harder due to the competion to find work and strain that the increased population puts on the inadequate infrastructure.
Seriously, what do gaijin expect? Red carpet treatment the moment they arrive? Limousine from airport to the penthouse they get for free? Even if a company or institution hired you, that's not the entire country. I can think of at least a dozen countries much worse than Japan when it comes to "welcoming".

IamGaijin: I agree with you, an unusual, interesting design.

after this shrinking population, wonder how many 20yr or 40yr olds will be there after a few years.....

Are "luxury powder rooms" a kind of glorified toilet, or something else entirely? Just wondering.

Switch Lounges lol wtf
Single, childless women between the ages of 30 and 40 with money to burn and no qualms about spending it. That's how they do it.
