To claim the vaccine doesn’t work on the new variant is more than a little premature as we simply don’t know yet. Any new variant there is concern it might evade the vaccine until research tells us precisely what it’s effects if any will be. Panicking and spreading fear on a solid foundation of a complete lack of definitive information helps nobody.

The quicker we get the majority of the world vaccinated and close down the avenues for the virus to mutate the quicker we all will get out of this. Spreading misinformation and encouraging the selfish refusal to get vaccinated will just make the situation worse for us all and encourage the possibility of a variant that completely evades the vaccine, putting us back to the beginning again.

Since this variant can be uncovered through PCR testing and most countries require a PCR test before departure and upon arrival, the immediate answer is to ban anyone from travelling carrying this variant and if infected in what is normally a 72 hour window before arrival, mandatory 14-21 day quarantine on arrival.

I suspect that is exactly what will happen. Which means tourism is going to suffer badly once again if this thing gets loose.

Its also long past time we looked past vaccines. Clearly the ones we have now are starting to fail. Far, FAR too many breakthrough infections. If you're at the point of 80-90% double dossed but you still seeing big numbers of infections which forces you into lockdowns (ie Israel, Singapore and soon much of Western Europe) then your strategy is not sustainable.

A population of 33000 has administered 94000 doses of vaccine, mostly Pfizer. 140% double dose rate, including boosters and their infections are spiking.....although very few deaths. Do they lockdown again? and again? and again? as we pump out the 4th, 5th, 6th dose.

Its time to look more seriously at preventing hospitalization through medications like Pfizers proposed tablet and much, MUCH more seriously at very cheap natural alternatives, like appropriate supplements (ie Vit D, Zinc, Quercetin etc), general fitness, sleep routines etc

I agree its too early, but the U.K has done some early analysis and they say vaccine efficacy could be reduced to as little as 30%. But yes its too early to tell.

If however, that does turn out to be in the ballpark then either we invent new vaccines pronto, completely isolate ourselves from Africa pronto or pursue medical/natural alternatives and stop seeing vaccination as some sort of silver bullet and ticket to the promised land, which it clearly isnt.

I however, will not take a booster, but I am intending to travel soonish, so ill be relying on option 3.

Well the vaccines, based on the original Wuhan variant, are pretty useless at preventing the spread of delta. So I don't have much hope that it will be any better for this new "highly mutated" variant.

I can already imagine just what kind of headache the chinese officials are gonna have when the winter olympic arrived. They would have to go all out again with testing and quarantines.

I've never understood why, in Japan, the colors for gain/loss are the opposite of other countries, and of common sense itself.

Vaccines are not meant to be a single measure that prevent all problems from an epidemic when a significant portion of the population refuses it because of irrational reasons. It still decrease very importantly the risks for the people vaccinated, which is their main role.

Like had to happen with MERS and the first SARS? any reference to prove what you "think" about what the experts consider about immunity, or is it just imaginary?

Vaccines are effective against the variant(s). The variants enable the virus by becoming more contagious. Those who are not immunized or fail to follow protocols are essentially disease vectors who endanger the general welfare and health. And are carriers for the mutated variants.

Suggesting that zinc, vitamins and Ivermectin are effective against the virus reveals a large ignorance, as none of those have any proven efficacy - in fact they are absolutely useless. A recent scientific, peer-reviewed paper examined 35 studies of Ivermectin, all 35 studies were highly flawed & arrived at bogus conclusions.

Hopefully, foreign tourists will not be arriving in Japan prior to summer 2022. Most small, independent, local and regional businesses will survive quite well on domestic tourism. As will larger urban hoteliers.

Factually true in Australia. Sometimes these little tidbits of information get passed the censors. The Israeli dr who said on live TV, 95% of (the record number) patients in the ICU due to coronavirus are fully vaccinated, the the most notable bit of info to get passed the censors.

The reason this new variant has emerged is because the vast majority of Africans remain unvaccinated. It was warned many times prior by the WHO and leading epidemiologists that underdeveloped, densely populated third world countries would be breeding grounds for the next variants emerging. We should have not only focused on ourselves but ensured via COVAX mechanisms and otherwise, that all countries without vaccines were looked after. Here's hoping they stop it in its tracks but it's not looking likely. Horse has bolted.
