Nissan CEO Ghosn earned Y987 mil in fiscal 2011

Ahhhhhhhh the auto industry what a great place to work.

I honestly wonder if any CEO is worth that money unless he is the original owner and reaping the fruits of his own labor and risk

It would take me 170 years to earn that much money. I wonder what he does with it all.

What I dont understand is why are we still living in a time where the people who dont hardly do any labor at all get paid the most. Pay people who do real work like Firemen, Doctors, Teachers, people who give their lives for others. They only make minimum wage and work triple overtime.

I'm not usually a proponent of high salaries for CEOs, but considering Ghosn saved Nissan from near bankruptcy, I'd say he's worth every yen. Not only is Nissan allied with Renault, but Ghosn holds the same title for the French manufacturer, so he's like a 2 for 1 deal.

Ghosn also said,"The company may eventually have to raise the remuneration paid to directors to secure highly skilled personnel."

The usual argument to justify the high wages, never proven....

Nissan is expecting a 400 billion yen profit for the business year through March 2013.

Will he take a pay cut when this doesn't materialize?

Wage disparity is approaching a point where, if the lessons of history are anything to go by, violent insurrection begins.

I congratulate Mr. Ghon on his achievement. It makes me want to work harder so that some day I would be in his shoes... I hope he would be a role model for my kids one day.

Ghosn said he was worried Nissan might have to reduce Japan production ... if the government didn’t do something to bring the yen’s strength under control. Is this what he's getting paid big money for ... to cut Nissan's production here or send it overseas where it will be produced more cheaply? Why not take a slice out of his pay to help the company? Or is he expecting yet more money in his pockets next year?

His annual pay is 987 million yen ($12 million). Is he really worth this much? Perhaps he is eyeing 1 billion by next year's shareholders' meeting.

Wasn't Japan the country grabbing about how their management didn't crazy insane bonuses and salaries and were looking down on the west for such things....

I guess if you get paid $12 million a year, you don't mind putting people out of work presumably causing considerable suffering and suicide.

With that much salary you can employ people who can take a step back from such issues, and think of the profits of the company.

If I remember correctly, CEO's get the majority of their income at the end of the year. During the year they are not paid very much. He is the CEO of Nissan Y987 million out of a Y400 billion profit? It is not bad for Nissan to pay him that salary it's only 1/400th of Nissans profit went to the CEO.

@ timtak, If J Govt did something about the value of the yen, no one at Nissian would be out of work.

I don't think it is Nissan's job to protect the J workers from the government's failure to deal with the economy, the debt, the issues... Nissan will be packing up just like Toyota and Japan Inc only has itself to blame.

Strangely, I feel myself siding with the high-pay-OK side. Ghosn has been Nissan CEO for quaite a long time, not a new bright light (think H-P). He has done a good job of improving the product line and the profits. Would that most American CEOs were as successful.

I'm on the OK side as well. If you look around the streets, there are much more upper middle class cars from Nissan than Toyota/Lexus driving around. He brought the Fairlady Z back to life and the future is looking bright as well.

Disgusting ! , nobody should be able to earn any where near that amount of money per year , no matter what their job. What till peak fuel arrives and the car companies are doing it hard , bicycles are the future , and bicycle sales are booming in Japan. Some young people do not want to spend a lot of money on a car but are buying high quality bicycles instead. No parking fees, low maintenance costs , no gas, no shaken, no road tax etc it's the ideal mode of transport for the masses !

Ghosn is a good businessman - that's beyond debate. However, it's sad to see Japan on its way to creating the repulsive wage gaps we find in the neoliberal economies. I always respected Japan's egalitarian instincts - something sadly lacking in my country of birth.

Nissan is reducing its production in Japan by sending it to Thailand. Its in the auto news this week. Suits do what they want. Nobody has figured that out yet?

If a company makes huge sums of money then of course the person in charge should as well. The shareholders should also receive a nice dividend. It's only natural. He's survived as CEO of Nissan for about 10 years and undoubtedly was the major contributor in turning the company around. Hats off to him and I hope Nissan reaches its targets for the coming years.

Earned? Earned? Gifted is more like it. He needs to try a few under cover days on the production line to say he earned it.

yeah sure, what did Ghosn personally do to save Nissan from near bankruptcy? CEOs are just the PR face of a company.. most of their "work" is done by delegating it to others and they just have to report the results to the public.

He is worth every yen

Ghosn is one of the best and respected foreigners in Japan, everyone in Japan respects him, they even published a manga about him. He owns every single yen and more, for saving the company that was about to be bankrupt and flourished and became a powerful company by one foreigner! all us foreigners should be proud!

Congratulations to Mr. Ghosn. He is worth every penny. He has earned it.

I am listing what I have received from my local Nissan dealer. I have been driving nothing but Toyota over 30 years, maybe this time, I will take a look at Altima. He has saved Nissan from going into bankruptcy and saved jobs for workers. Hope Japanese executives learn something positive from Mr. Ghosn.

Yep, but you have to be a good delegator to make sure things get done the way you want them to be done. I'm sure his top level managers did quite well salary-wise too.

globalwatcher.....Altima is a good boring car but if you really want a drivers car and don't have enough money to buy new, get a used BMW 328, 330, or Audi A4 Quattro. There is plenty of excellent used 3 series BMW and Audi A4's. Once you drive these cars that are connected to the road, you woudn't want to buy Nissan. Stay on top on maintence for German cars and you will be glad you did. I wouldn't own a Nissan product.

Ghosn depends on Nissan workers who are willing to work for about 1/200th, or .0005% of what he makes. Cool!

Nissan 370Z (Fairlady in Japan)? Didn't think Nissan could make an ugly car any worse but I guess Nissan designers are incompetent as ever. The 370Z still looks like an ugly frog from the side profile and the back. This car should be called Uglylady in Japan.
