Nissan will go under soon. They've lost the ball, and at present everything is against them. Trying to align with the Chinese is a last ditch attempt at a revival, which under the current Political environment will backfire upon them. Seriously if you hold their stock, review your mindset upon why.

Smart people do things smartly.
Yup and as Forest wisely wisely said, stupid is as stupid does.

So Saikawa, as many suspected was dirty and he gets away with:
So the word of Japanese is accepted whereas that of a foreigner is NOT! Why is this not splashed all over the news as was the case with Ghosn? Why is he not hounded by the media and the Public Prosecutors to tell the truth? Why is he NOT in detention pending investigation from the public prosecutors office?
Why is the media both at home and abroad NOT asking these questions of the Japanese prosecutors and Nissan itself?
Its stinks too much methinks and should make every foreigner residing in Japan think very carefully of how easy it is to get railroaded because you are simply not Japanese. Utterly shameful behaviour in every respect!
I suspect Ghosn will have the last laugh though as Nissan, like the Titanic, is definately on a one way ticket to doom.

TIME will tell, why is Saikawa not yet arrested ???.
Nobnaga
if your not Japanese you get sued but if you Japanese you just have to apologies then tell them that you are not gonna quit your job and keep getting bribed or stealing money from the company

Chinese are very open to new things, as long as Nissan has new ideas
That's the thing, the new idea's guy was arrested/jailed, cannot leave Japan and was dismissed from his position.. so the sun has set on new ideas and bailout would be in the horizon soon.

I'm sure it was. It's just that the established processes suck.
I'm sure they were. It's just that the variety of viewpoints suck.

Nissan may as well turn East, as it’s lost total credibility and respect from the West. Pragmatic decision. Wish the new fella all the best. He didn’t orchestrate the mess, just has to deal with it. Ni how.
wtfjapan
why saikawa is not being charged like ghosn?
the same reason why many other top officials caught with corruption dont go to jail, because Japan.
Joe Blow
Well, Japan copies things too.
The difference is, Japan copies things with a mind to make them better than the original.
China copies things with a mind to churn out a lower-priced version by cutting corners and making it as quickly as possible.

Naah, that won't happen. As they say, once bitten, twice shy! They won't let anyone get as close as Ghosn did to compromising Nissan's independence!
zones2surf
LOL! That is a rhetorical question, right???
Because the answer is obvious. I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.
Its the same reason that the executives of Kansai Election haven't been arrested for corruption / bribery.
J Inc. protects its own.
Arresting Ghosn was never about the alleged crime he committed, it was purely to take him down, because he was a foreigner who was a threat to J Inc.!!

mtuffizi: why saikawa is not being charged like ghosn?
Ahem ... follow the DNA and nationality. Timothy Langley pointed this out in a podcast last week.
JBird
The way Nissan is going there may never be ANY CEO again soon.

why saikawa is not being charged like ghosn?
papigiulio
Why and why? I thought Ghosn's trial was suppose to start this October! Also, imagine if he wasn't allowed to leave jail, he would have to be in there for almost two whole years, while sneaky snake Saikawa can just get off scott free, what a system.

never say never....ever...
Shareholders of Nissan are pragmatic about their money. If they need to bring in a ringo to do things a Japanese CEO won't do in case his hands get dirty, then they will.

And, with that, the entire operation organized by J Inc. is now complete.
J Inc. was never going to allow Nissan to be merged into Renault, which was where Ghosn was taking things. Therefore, it was all hands on deck to prevent that happening, which involved the former bureaucrats on the Board, METI, J execs at Nissan, and, of course, the MOJ.
The first step was to take Ghosn out of the equation. Which they have done.
The second was to appoint a useful transitional figure, in the form of Saikwa. Which they did.
And, now, finally, to appoint a go forward CEO who is Japanese.
Mission accomplished. Nissan is back in the hands of the Japanese, who will never allow it be merged into Renault, and there will NEVER EVER be another CEO who is not Japanese.
Game, set, match.

China gets NISSAN and the rest of the world gets DATSUN.

.
Uchida as CEO and Ashwani Gupta as COO are unexpected but good choices.
They come with credentialled work history in the auto industry, with trackable growth .
They are familiar with the potential in emerging markets such as China and India.
.

So they can steal them.
Because it does not respect intellectual property rights.
And then you realize that Japanese works have manners whereas Chinese workers don't.
Yubaru
Tell that to the people who have to deal with Chinese tourists! Plenty of culture shock. And THOSE are the potential customers of Nissan!
Like freedom? You just got to be kidding! China is "open" to new gadgets and what not, but what it can not make on it's own, it either steals or copies from somewhere else!
Akie
4 advices to Uchida:
1, China will be Nissan's largest market, that is the fate;
Chinese are very open to new things, as long as Nissan has new ideas, China will accept them, so don't be shy;
Chinese will lead in technologies in 10 years, it is huge opportunity for future Nissan;
Chinese workers and Japanese workers are easily mix, no cultural shock.sf2k
Should be in jail
Yubaru
Oh come on, just looking to find an way to connect the dots of the assumptions you put out in the article!
Nissan had few options from within the company here in Japan, many would have been tainted by either Saikawa or Ghosen so they had to go "overseas" to find someone to take the helm, and someone who would agree to do it as well!
I kind of feel sorry for this guy, if he is up to the challenge and brings Nissan back, more power to him, yet, if he is of the traditional Japanese CEO mold, Nissan is going to continue on it's current path to irrelevance!
Chip Star
Great. It's not as if corruption isn't rampant in China.
