Japanese scandals are often characterized by employees covering up for dubious performances and relationships to "save face," sometimes out of loyalty to the company, rather than illegal enrichment for personal gain as is more common in some other countries.

lol.

they do it because they want to have the best product, to be competitive with other brands (and this is their only way to achieve that, same with Kobe steel) which ultimately means for the money.

Stop with the self regulation, it is NOT WORKING. The government needs to fine company's and put exec's in jail. Taking a pay cut (AKA buying your way out) is not effective and this latest "scandal" shows that.

Are there any Japanese corporations that are not full of poop? It's just sickening how many Japanese corporations in so many different industries are guilty of blatant fraud! There is not a single industry in Japan that has not been involved in fraud and misleading consumers. Cars, air bags, nuclear power, pharmaceuticals, the construction industry, steel manufacture, finance and more. If you were to pick any industry you will find cases of fraud.

@gogogo - Stop with the self regulation, it is NOT WORKING.

It's working perfectly - for Japan Inc. All this fraud is kept in Japan and is not international news. The only reason TAKATA air bags got done was because they killed a dozen people internationally. There are half a dozen deaths in Japan attributed to the airbags, but nothing was done about it until the US courts starting hunting them. It's quite clear that Nippon Kaigi is built on smoke and mirrors BS!

Stay here for decades and you’ll realize that dishonestly runs right through this society.

Fake testing, fake ingredients labeling, fake onsen, fake priests, daily lying.

Where is the former CEO Carlos Ghosn to explain this? He's gone!

Good Japanese Companies of the 80s gone in the late 90s, one of those is 'National'.

Seems Japan is just as corrupt as elsewhere, though unlike other places, just those who do it here, simply get off the hook with a bow and a tear and a promise not to do it again.

Turn off that Nissan Engine - you're killing me!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well sadly for Nissan lovers, you don't have much choice, seems they've lied to you about the Emissions on their Fossil fueled cars and also on the mileage you can get with their Electric cars (and also how quickly you can recharge them too!). I won't buy Nissan.

Car manufacturing and transportation are leading causes of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

Unethical companies make it worse but it starts with your decision to drive and own a car. A paradigm shift away from private car ownership is needed yesterday - because cars are killing the planet.

Exactly how in any other Country. Maybe if some people want to make Japan look "unique" in a good sense, apparently many other people want to make Japan look "unique" in a bad sense.

Stay here for decades and you’ll realize that dishonestly runs right through this society.

You can say the same about the rest of the world.

Seems Japan is just as corrupt as elsewhere

Correct.

though unlike other places, just those who do it here, simply get off the hook with a bow and a tear and a promise not to do it again.

Which other places? This is why businessmen involved in tons of scandals are still making their things, like Trump or Berlusconi?

Should the world learn from South Korea, that I saw praised in this site about this topic, for no real reason, considered the real situation?

South Korea's long history of light sentences for business leaders

https://money.cnn.com/2017/01/17/investing/south-korea-chaebol-culture-corruption/index.html

Honestly, I think it's like that everywhere.

No, not even the so called immaculate North European Countries are so "clean" like they publicize themselves (Germany, I'm speaking about you, an not only). It's a fake myth to make them look good compared to the "corrupt, horrend South Europe".

The government needs to fine company's and put exec's in jail.

Well, it's not like this can change the things for real. See:

Managing from behind bars

SK chairman Chey Tae-won was convicted of embezzlement in 2013 and spent about two years in prison, one of the longest sentences served by a chaebol leader.

But Chey continued to oversee the SK empire from behind bars, receiving more than 1,700 visitors, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Chey was eventually pardoned in 2015 and reinstated as SK Group chairman last March.

Source, the earlier article I linked: https://money.cnn.com/2017/01/17/investing/south-korea-chaebol-culture-corruption/index.html

Also some months of jail can be only a facade for the powerful ones, around the world.

Justice isn't equal for everyone, this is the simple truth. If an ordinry citizen stole a candy, he would get real punishment.

I was replying to this sentence

The government needs to fine company's and put exec's in jail.

I forgot to quote it, but I think people got it.

Anyway, it's not how I'm waiting for some people in this site changing their attitude, despite my posts are about objective facts that everyone should know (and probably knows).

But sometimes it's necessary to expose the simple truth that people don't like to listen here. ;)

The emission cheating scandal is spreading around the world, I think it's difficult to find a carmaker that isn't involved in this stuff.

Just another example:

https://money.cnn.com/2017/05/25/news/companies/gm-emissions-cheating/index.html

You would think that after GM was saved by the American government with taxpayers money, they would behave better than they did in the past. This company should be already bunkrupted in a clean world, but this doesn't happen for two reasons:

too big to fail, too powerful

lawyers business

I think one of the main business in the US is exactly lawyers business. You would think that the fact that lawyers business is so developed in the US and lawsuits are so common, would prevent some major scandals in industries. But I don't see an improvement in transparency at all. So, it's not really easy to find a way to prevent business misconduct, since these same misconduct feed another huge business, and despite everything, big companies always find a way to be saved by someone, except for some rare cases.

Again, only the ordinary guy who steals a candy, can be seriously screw up, this is the kind of society where we live.

Where is the former CEO Carlos Ghosn to explain this? He's gone!

He's not gone as he's been promoted to CEO of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

So if you've some questions...

Yeah...it must be that gaijin Ghosn,s fault...the Japanese execs would never allow this to happen, thats why no other J-Inc company has been found to have done the same...Oh Wait a second...lol

A CEO of an alliance is situated at the top of the pyramid so yes accountable..

Oh wait...I've difficulties understanding certain issues...lol

For the Ghosn fans:

Oh, you mean like the CEO,s of say just of the top of one,s head....eg. Mitsubishi or Subaru or Kobe Steel or Takata or Tepco or Olympus...or..or...etc ...yep they were all Japanese :)

How many of them were really held responsible huh?

Yep, when you've a clue about who's accountable in an industry you could have known.

Enlighten yourself with the Diesel issues of Volkswagen. But I think that you don't care at all about this subject but have some personal issues with Japan and his inhabitants isn't it?

There's a guaranteed solution for that.... :)

That’s one problem with hanko’s - they can be used by others, and often are.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I've often thought it strange that on the one hand we are told that car emissions have never been cleaner and on the other hand pollution levels in large cities are increasing. Traffic levels in western cities have not grown enormously in recent years so the only conclusion is that car emissions are not as clean as they say.

It appears that many car companies have been lying and cheating in emission tests. I would like to see diesel cars banned (although there are few in Japan) and other cars thoroughly tested by the government, not the manufacturers.
