What a slap in the face.. he was the one who gave birth to the Leaf to begin with! not to mention their electric cars, self driving cars and the GTR..
Jimi
Boycott this company and dont buy this car. What a a disgraceful bunch, they threw Ghosn to the lions and are now taking the credit for his idea.
smithinjapan
Does it run on leaves and bark? Just blow off the expressway like a leaf in a storm? Why the lame name? When this fails and the company starts going under again, watch them ask Ghosn to be a consultant.
Bugle Boy of Company B
He's breaking the 4th wall?
Belrick
gf has the original LEAF. 120kms if you're lucky. And the article says they go on sale later this month, but a local Nissan shop near me is already selling them. And at 3 million, they're overpriced!
Belrick
oops, 4.1 million
Goodlucktoyou
The car is not an arrested criminal. The car is a very good solution to oil wars and global warming.
Belrick
And I agree, this is really low on the part of NISSAN and Saikawa! A below the belt move. I have no faith in the current Nissan brand / system anymore.
Melody
Good on Nissan.
garymalmgren
as measured under Japanese regulations
Does anyone have details as to what that means?
I am a teeny bit skeptical.

The car should be fine, and it now looks far better than the early models. I looked long and hard at the both the latest Leaf and Note E-Power. Sadly out of my price range.
As to the politics at Nissan, there is no-one there that I particularly love, but this Saikawa guy is something else. Last night as he bowed away from the camera crew making lame no-comment excuses, he did just for a split second look like a guilty rat.

smith: Don't worry about the "Leaf" name too much. I suppose it is katakanaized into "Ree-Fuu". Appreciate your metaphors...can't think of anything that can be done with Ree-Fuu. I do wonder where is Nissan in Ghosn's support case? Will they dunk that name on a future car? At least it cannot be katakanized...
Wakarimasen
This should be renamed the Nissan Car Loss.......
And Ghosn didn't start the GTR, he reintroduced it (and a great car it is).
Kenji Fujimori
He brought the GTR back during his 20 year tenure, the previous CEO axed it off.
Belrick
Ghosn revived the Z and GTR lines.
And for the price of this car, I'd rather buy a new Z in the same price ball park.
nandakandamanda
From Nissan I have had in my long life a Sunny, two Bluebirds, a Sylvia, two GTRs and a Cube. All I.C.E.
Cheap to run and cheap to maintain, an electric vehicle kind of tickles my fancy right now, and Nissan with their Leaf have a serious track record....

The Leaf - Ghosn with the Wind?
HollisBrown
So taking into account the recent scandals regarding fuel efficiency and stating figures in brochures that come from perfect tests conducted in wind tunnel conditions etc. it's safe to say that the new Leaf actually does less than the stated 458 km per charge.
sakurasuki
So who will give speech for this car launch or other cars in the future? Saikawa?
Looking forward to see him representing Nissan in international events.
Mlodinow
...and yet Nissan the company certainly isn't.
kohakuebisu
Electric cars are probably the future, but the high price of electricity in Japan is a disadvantage for anyone selling them here. I've read some frightening articles about vehicle pollution and what it does to people, especially children, so electric cars would be a step forward.
The original model Leaf has been one of the fastest depreciating cars in Japan. You can get them for very little second hand compared to regular cars of the same age.
nandakandamanda
Nissan the company has never really been appealing, Mlodinow.
Long before Ghosn appeared on the scene I heard rumors of slave labor conditions in their factories. In fact, under Ghosn they may have bcome relatively appealing, certainly in their vehicle lineup and company ethos.
kwatt
The cars designed/made by engineers have nothing to do with Ghosn's matter. He has been proud of Japanese engineers and still.
Cricky
How long does it take to charge?....
nandakandamanda
Cricky, you can charge it up overnight at home, and at a public charger either slowly or quickly depending on which you desire.
Charging time at a fast charger will be about the same as for any other EV I would guess, roughly 80% in half an hour?
In fact I have just run a Giggle for you: https://search.yahoo.co.jp/search;_ylt=A2RhYMww1TVcdXYArHCJBtF7?p=how+long+to+charge+a+Nissan+leaf&fr=top_ga1_sa&ei=UTF-8&aq=undefined&oq=how+long+to+charge+a+nissan+leaf&at=s&aa=&ai=vaKy8nn_QqGJVZUOx3A_7A&ts=9103
nandakandamanda
Roughly 30 mins to 80%, the most important part cut out of the post above.
gogogo
No thanks Nissan, never buy one of your products ever again.

"Ghosn has been charged with underreporting his income. Tokyo prosecutors have extended his detention through Friday, adding breach of trust allegations."
"Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci"
This guy's been all over the place, going from Renault to Fiat then Toyota before joining Nissan. I wonder if he regrets that last move...
Serrano
@nandakanda Thanks for the info and the Giggle search! Tee hee!
ironsword
Don't buy this car from this disgusting company. I will never buy anything from nissan ever
kyushubill
Ah yes, the car that Ghosn's leadership built.
Disillusioned
Perhaps the running of the car is ecological, but there is very little 'ecological' about the manufacturing of the car or the materials it is made from. The batteries are an ecological disaster in the making.
I haven't owned a Nissan car since I bought a Datson 1000 for my Mrs in 1980. I won't buy another one either. And, it's not because of Ghosn. It's just because they are crap cars.
juminRhee
Why not have the battery where it could be pulled out and exchanges easily so the driver can go in less than 5 minutes? The "gas" station can charge the batteries and exchange with drivers for a charging or exchange fee (¥500).
ksteer
The original LEAF came out in 2011, way before battery technology was up to snuff, on top of that its 8 years old... The battery technology in this new model is light years ahead of the original leaf and would last anyone a day easily.
I HIGHLY doubt it was Ghosn's idea. Thats a bit insulting to the engineering teams who spent thousands of research hours and tests on developing the first leaf before it was even shown to Ghosn.
Yep the leaf, a car that's been out since 2011 and has been, continuously mind you, the best selling electric vehicle in the world is going to "fail". Tell me, why do you always have negative things to say? Ive literally never seen you post a good comment.
It means the car was measured for range based on the testing methods employed in Japan. Every country has their own testing methods, all of them end with different results. Generally Japan employs two testing methods: the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism method which is generally start at a full tank and run until empty at a speed of 60km/h. It usually gives an optimistic result. And another method called WMTC (only for motorcycles) . In comparison, the e+ LEAF will go 226 miles on a single charge according to the US EPA testing method. In real world conditions this is likely to be less than the stated range, but can sometimes even be more.
Things like proper use of regenerative braking can drastically increase the range of the vehicle, as well can temperature.
vinarius@pm.catv.ne.jp
Nissan Japan never understood anything............do u think U can just carry on business as if nothing had happened ???. We will not spend even 1 yen on any Nissan products if U still carry on with yr old Japanese team namely saikawa. Nissan has no more value in the eyes of us, investors. Therefore, stop wasting time and put the low level Japanese in detention as yr first step to slove yr poor image & bad reputation. At this moment, no new products of Nissan is worth even 1 yen. A bad reputation company cannot produce any good things. Pls stop wasting our time and our money.
tinawatanabe
This is Nissan's technology, nothing to do with Ghosn. That's why Renault was interested in Nissan.
Cricky
A very androgynous looking car, is it a Honda?, maybe a Mitsubishi? Could be a Subaru? Ah a Nissan! Definitely not in my driveway thankyou.
Samit Basu
@Belrick
Old Leaf had a Japanese battery. This new Leaf has a Korean battery, same as all the Audis, BMWs, Jaguars, Cadillacs, Porsches, etc.
Akie
Don't forget that Ghosn did something good for Nissan.
semperfi
@Eric Tatsumi : But with all that is happening, no way I will buy a Nissan.
There are a lot of people outside of Japan who feel the same - not so much because of the Ghosn arrest etc - but Nissan , when GHosn was at the helm, several times claimed inaccurate 'testing' results around EMISSION CONTROLS.
That aroused public mistrust a lot.
semperfi
That being said the LEAF comes out at the top of 2018 Electric cars next to the BOLT.
SaikoPhysco
In Japan... the leaf magically gets 458 kpc, while in the USA, the exact same car gets only 382 kpc. Yes the standards are different when getting these numbers but when you consider that consumer advocacy groups are practically non existent in Japan.... which number / standard do you think will be more accurate.
Belrick
The Fairlady Z is the best selling sports car of all time. The engines are the most reliable in the world. The only thing I don't like about my 350z, is the cheap plastic interior parts. Definitely not crap cars, but does seem like Nissan skipped out on quality for some models!
Belrick
*amongst the most reliable
mtuffizi
if nissan did not do anything wrong, why postponed the veiwing of leaf back then?
i was interested in leaf before, but i really can not buy any of their product until the company realized
what "human rights" is.
buying their products in some way encourage nissan to keep on mistreating human.
