Nissan unveils new Skyline Crossover with enhanced parking technology

Nissan Motor Co on Monday launched its all-new Skyline Crossover. The Crossover offers an optimal balance of smooth handling, supple ride comfort and responsive acceleration provided by its powerful 3.7-liter VQ37VHR engine and 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. It also features a number of advanced technologies and safety systems, highlighted by an Around View Monitor with Parking Guide and Lane Departure Prevention system.

The exterior evokes the image of solidity and lightness. Its long front nose, with hood bulge extending from the grille to the front door mirrors, combines with the coupe-like arched cabin to provide classic front-engine/rear-wheel drive proportions. The elegantly curved waistline flows from the front of the vehicle through the dramatic rear fenders and dynamic rear design. Other exterior features include xenon headlights and Active AFS (Adaptive Front lighting System), high-mounted LED stop lamps, bright LED rear combination taillights, heated door mirrors and flat-blade windshield wipers.

Inside, the modern, high-quality interior's embracing design offers smooth soft-to-the-touch materials and real wood trim with a gradational surface effect. Comfort and utility are enhanced by long, raised armrests and a high-utility center console. The interior also offers an automatic folding rear seat (the seatback can be raised automatically and also folded from a button in the luggage space), a retractable coat hanger located on the back of the driver's seat (standard on Type P models), and a new Welcome Lighting system - the first for Nissan vehicles. When the driver with an Intelligent Key approaches the Skyline Crossover, lamps in the door mirrors illuminate the ground below and interior lighting activates for more convenient entry at night or in dark parking garages.

Also available are a Bose audio system (standard on all models) and a HDD CARWINGS navigation system with built-in terrestrial digital TV receiver. The system's mapping can be updated by downloading from a computer or mobile communications device. As the latest in vehicle navigation system design, it offers enhanced entertainment features including iPod connections and digital TV receiver.

The Crossover features a range of advanced technologies designed to promote safe, pleasurable driving, including Around View Monitor (AVM), LDP/LDW (Lane Departure Prevention/Lane Departure Warning systems), FCW (Forward Collision Warning), Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range) and a Safety Drive Guide.

The Around View Monitor system (standard on 370GT Type P/370GT FOUR Type P) includes a new Parking Guide function, which assists the driver when parking by providing a "birds-eye view" of the vehicle to help the driver see the vehicle, parking lines and obstacles. The Parking Guide can tell the driver where to begin backing in and steering with a birds-eye view and audio cues.

In addition, the Front/Rear Wide View Function allows 180-degree visibility in the both front and the rear providing a sense of safety in blind intersections. The Front Wide View Function Linked to the Car Navigation System automatically shows the front wide view when the car is stationary (at the map point entered on the navigation system).

The Skyline Crossover's LDP (Lane Departure Prevention) system builds on LDW (Lane Departure Warning) system that warns the driver to pay attention to driving with a visual display and audible buzzer in case of unintended lane departure. LDP, a factory installed option, assists the driver in returning the vehicle in the direction of center of the travel lane by generating part of necessary yaw moment and controlling the brake pressure of each individual wheel.

FCW (Forward Collision Warning) warns the driver with a visual display and audible buzzer if the vehicle approaches too close to the vehicle ahead when driving at speeds of over 15 kilometers per hour, while the new Intelligent Cruise Control (with full-speed range following capability) functions across the full-speed range. Both FCW and Intelligent Cruise Control are factory-installed options.

Price range: 4,200,000 yen to 4,998,000 yen, including consumption tax.

Can anyone tell me the advanage of a 7-speed automatic transmission?

Hell, with speed limits of 31MPH on most roads, I can't get out of third gear with out hitting another red light.

With all these gadgets, it is no wonder that drivers here are reduced to being steering wheel attendants and accidents waiting to happen; one foot up on the seat, texting, gabbing on their mobile phones, eating, drinking and smoking as they navigate the back streets of Japan at speed. A move back to manual might make them better drivers with more street sense....

Yes. The more gears you have built into an automatic transmission the smoother the acceleration/decceleration. The fewer the gears the higher the chance that there isn't an optimum gear ratio available for the particular speed your vehicle is travelling.

USNinJapan2 is perfectly right. In addition, if you want to feel how the gears works then better experience riding a 21 or 24 or 27 or 30 speed bicycles.

Go on the highway to use 7th. Or even better try Izu skyline or similar and take a chance with the speed limit.

Loooks like a nice car - Nissan making some good machines of late

Point taken Kidoave and USNin, but it does seem a little like overkill- in the auto they might as well just go for a CVT box, and in the manual, for example the LS-F (IS-F?), it's just too many in my opinion. Does seem like a pretty nice car though if you're in the luxo-barge end of the market.

Appears to simply be the Infiniti EX which has been available overseas for a couple yrs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infiniti_EX

I'm generalizing, but CVT trannies are better for efficiency but can't handle high power and performance. That's why you don't see CVT's in high-end (high performance/luxury) vehicles for the most part. Instead they have automatic trannies with a six or more gears which will give you the same seamless shifting as the CVT but without sacrifice the power and the ability to use the engine to decelerate/brake. I for one would never have bought my current SUV if it had a CVT transmission.

Sales targets 200 units per month. For a vehicle with (unnecessary) high performance and loaded with gadgets and a bland unattractive body styling. What's this troubled company really after?

Is this to satisfy the copious amount of shit drivers out there who can't manage such a mundane thing as park the frigging car!!

I've always loved the Skyline, but Nissan is horribly behind Toyota and Honda in moving beyond gas powered vehicles. What would have been more meaningful is if this new model had been introduced as a hybrid.

USNin,

Thanks for the info. I've had a couple of 4WDs myself, and I quite like an auto for sand work. I currently have a Forester STi, (only come as a self rower with 6 speeds) and I have to say I definitely wouldn't want it to have an auto, let alone a CVT, considering the limitations you mentioned. Cheers.

All of these features are great, but using some common sense by Japanese going out to walk their dogs at night, jogging etc..DO NOT WEAR ALL BLACK! Only an idiot wears all black clothes at night making it very, very difficult for drivers to spot you, hence the hit and runs.

Hope this cuts down the 5 minutes it takes them to back into a space.
