Panasonic was sideswiped by slumping sales on the back of the global slowdown and also took on huge restructuring costs, which contributed heavily to its bleeding bottom line.

No, it got "sideswiped" by failure by management. It gambled too heavily on plasma technology while SK was making LCD's better and cheaper. Too much arrogance and inward focus.

Executives of Panasonic are on the right course, it is humanly impossible to compete with Ctrl + C - Ctrl + V company as LG and Samsung.

issa1: Samsung clearly makes the better product, and consumers agree. Hence, the company is outselling all Japanese electronics companies (much as some posters will deny it). Hereforenow is right -- Panasonic gambled and lost, bigtime.

Sharp is partly owned by Samsung now. For TV making business, Japanese will never recover due to high cost and lack of innovation. Back in 1990s, I dumped 20 inches Lucky Goldstar(known as LG now) TV for superior and more expensive Panasonic TV.

Now a days, LG is so impressive for sharpness and crystal clear images. I wish to dump Panasonic flat screen TV for replacing with LG. Chinese TVs Konga or TCL are not far away from Panasonic quality. How time and tide has changed?

Panasonic could never compete with Samsung after 2008 with the yen going up and the won going down. Panasonic (and Sharp) kept too much production in Japan to remain competitive.

One of these days Samsung is going to be hit by the same problem.

Management must be rubbish (surprise!!). how does one lose money making TV's, a product in which Panasonic had a huge lead over most rivals only 5 to 10 years ago?

This slide of Japanese TV makers is not new. Once the Japanese market was saturated with new TVs, all driven by the digital switch, the Japanese had no other push in the world. High labor costs and quality made the J-TV pricey in a "disposable" digital age.

No. Panasonic plasma TVs, particularly the VTs, are regarded as the best by true video afficionados and by the most respected home theater equipment reviewers. But they are more expensive than Samy's.

Lol. They were not on the right course. Why make blatant lies and weak excuses? What did LG and Sammy copy and paste from Panasonic exactly?

Not entirely true. Just look at Vizio. In 2012 Vizio had a 18.5% market share in the 32-inch and 40-to-42-inch screen sizes. That's not bad for a company that was founded in 2002.

I used to love Panasonic as a brand of highest quality, all that went to the drain when I wantoed to purchase a blu-ray home theater system with Ipod dock (about two years ago) there were many other brands and I couldn't buy it because the DVD player could not play other dvd that were from different region codes. I own a large collection of Region 1 and many J-pop concerts dvd region 2, that was a bummer, at that time the only home theater system blu-ray/DVD that was region free was SONY (And I don't like sony)

Last year I asked my nerd friends about a good TV that weren't expensive, by far the winnera was cinema 3d LG It was cheap compared with panasonic, so to continue I ended up with the 3d bluray with home theater system, still the DVD is not region free but luckily L'Arc~en~Ciel is releasing their Live DVD region free....

Pity what is happening to Panasonic, I still like the lumix cameras though... but I think the major problem was a bad strategy on staying with one technology, adding that to their products are more expensive.
