Tokyo is far more expensive than Osaka-who makes this stuff up?

So there are no regular suits available in Paris? I find this really hard to believe that everyone in Paris wears a 2000 dollar suit on average. Can anyone confirm..

I used to live in Osaka and there are very few expats. The only area where there may be more than a handful are on Rokko Island where there are some foreign company headquarters, and costs there are not representative of Osaka.

Rokko Island (actually in Kobe, if you recall) has almost no remaining expat residents. The atmosphere out there is downright depressing for those of us who remember it from 20 years ago. My wife's family lived there for a time after the earthquake as their home was badly damaged. P&G moved their regional HQ to Singapore some years back and it's been all downhill ever since. They maintain a much-reduced presence in Sannomiya. I also see some expats who work with the Eli Lilly subsidiary. The foreigners I encounter--and there are more than ever--are students, visiting researchers at universities throughout Kansai plus Riken on Port Island, which has ironically become the more thriving of Kobe's manmade islands.

So Osaka is now more expensive than Tokyo? That's an interesting development.

This article is about the costs for expats - which I believe for these surveys refers those who have been sent to live overseas by their companies. Probably the comparison on price is one for the quality of suit that these guys will be wearing. I have no doubt you can get a cheaper suit in Paris, but if the metric being compared across cities is the average cost for a tailor-made suit, then it will be a higher price.

I have been in Japan for 3 years. Kobe for 2 and Osaka for 1. I’ve vacationed in Tokyo but I’ve never lived there. Osaka is a lot more expensive than Kobe. Housing is more, groceries are more, and city taxes are higher.

When it comes to eating out in Osaka, Kobe, and Tokyo I found that Tokyo was cheaper to eat out everyday than Osaka and Kobe.

Transportation is much more costly in Osaka. Especially when you travel to the other parts of Osaka Fu. Not just Osaka city.

Subway rides in Osaka are more expensive than Tokyo for same length of ride.

From my experiences, as a whole, Tokyo is more expensive than Osaka. Yes, train transportation is less in Tokyo. However, since Osaka is smaller, there is less train transfers and stress than Tokyo. Tokyo rent is more expensive and so are groceries and restaurants. I'm sure Kobe is also a little more expensive than Osaka, too.

I'm surprised this article didn't include San Francisco, which is far more expensive than Los Angeles. Thank the dot.com industry for that.

Singapore is really reasonable for tourists. Transport and food are top quality yet cheap, hotels so-so, while alcohol is the only killer. Overall, cheaper than any Western country I've been to.

Alcohol is ridiculous in Singapore. I took my client out for drinks when I was there last - two long-island ice teas cost me SING$60. I think it's the most expensive plain drink I've ever bought. The hotels I also find overpriced compared to other places in Asia.

You can eat some quality street food from the hawkers for really cheap though. I love eating in Singapore.

I don’t think so. Osaka has grown extremely expensive especially when you compare the income levels.

Tokyo has a higher income level but Osaka keeps getting it with rising prices for everything.

8 days enough to travel HK

3 days enough to travel Singapore

1 day enough to travel Paris & also London.

All not reasonably expensive.
