Peach Aviation, Japan’s first dedicated low cost carrier, on Thursday launched operations with a flight from Osaka's Kansai International Airport to Sapporo's New Chitose airport.

For its first phase of operations, Peach has three round trips a day to Sapporo and four daily round-trip services to Fukuoka.

For the summer, Peach will add five new routes that include Osaka (Kansai) – Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Okinawa (Naha), Hong Kong and Taiwan (Taoyuan).

The Osaka (Kansai) – Nagasaki route will commence on March 25, while the Osaka (Kansai) – Kagoshima route will commence on April 1. Both routes will have two round-trip flights available per day. Including the Osaka (Kansai) – Okinawa (Naha), Hong Kong, Taiwan (Taoyuan) routes and the Osaka (Kansai) – Fukuoka, Sapporo (Shin-Chitose), Seoul (Incheon) routes, Peach will expand to a total of five domestic and three international routes for its summer timetable.

Its about time Japan had its share of budget airlines. I wanted to fly Okinawa in December but was going to cost over 250k¥ for a family of four. We also wanted to fly to Hokkaido but were quoted a similar ridiculous price. Now we can look forward to flying to homeland destinations at sensible prices just like other countries enjoy. Big thanks to Peach Airways.

It's a tiny drop in the bucket - they are and will remain a marginalized fringe player. And why is it lilac and not "peach" colored or at least a shade of orange. Check out the definitions for Peach in the urban dictionary - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=peach

The branding conducted for this airline seems so arbitrary and at the whim of senior executives that have no clue about marketing.

Yeahhhh Peach!

The Peach in Peach Aviation is actually an acronym. Pan - Asian,Energetic,Affordable,Cute and cool,Happy. Wow. Lets hope they dont follow in the footsteps of Peach Air,a UK charter airline that only lasted 2 years. Apprently 1090 applied for 90 jobs as in flight attendants.

This is great news. The more competition the better, I do question the choice of the name peach though :)

I thought they called it "Peach" as it is an anagram of "Cheap". They have fares from Osaka to Sapporo of around Y5000. I looked at Sendai to Osaka the other day on ANA and they wanted Y33000 (one way). Thieves! I'll be going on the train.

I too appreciate lower fares, but at some point you have to wonder if these lower fares mean lower quality.

It is expensive to operate an airline. Qualified and experience personal don't come cheap. Safe and efficient equipment is not cheap. I sometimes wonder what "budget" airlines like this are cutting back on so that they can keep their fares low. Are any of these cost cutting measures resulting in less safety?

Personally, I think that in some cases fares are just to low. Flying is more expensive than taking the bus or the train because the costs involved are different. Not everyone in every situation needs to fly, especially in a country like Japan with so many other viable means of transportation. Sacrificing comfort and safety just to squeeze more people into a small space, hiring less experienced crew/staff because they are willing to work cheaper, reducing customer service to a passenger standing in from of a monitor doing all the work themselves, etc., etc. make the flying experience less enjoyable and anxious in my opinion.

One of the reasons airline companies are bombarding all of their customers with hidden fees, surcharges, etc. is that they can charge a fair price for fares any more. One of the reasons, cabin crew members, ticket agents, maintenance staff, customer service staff, etc. always seem so surly is because their numbers/wages have been cut back is because airlines can't offset these costs with revenues from fares like they once could. One of the reasons, that passengers are so grumpy is because they are crammed into narrow seats with very little leg room, asked to pay for everything from food/beverages to entertainment, etc., etc. is because the airlines have cut back on so many services so that they can keep fares low.

Traveling plane allows you to go fairly quickly from with place to another in a relatively short amount of time. This convenience should have a cost. If you want to take advantage of this then you should be willing to pay for it. If you cannot afford it then you should be willing to accept a lesser option or wait until a time when you can afford it. Not everyone is meant to fly; some people are meant to travel by trains and buses if that all they can afford.

Lots of people complain about the quality of service many airline companies are providing these days but they are just getting what they're paying for. If more passengers were willing to accept higher fares then service would probably improve. Cheaper does not always mean better and in most cases you usually just end up getting what you pay for.
