Prices of food, drink items to increase

The prices of food products including ice cream and fish paste will rise from Friday due to an increase in distribution and ingredient costs. In April, dairy products such as milk and yogurt as well as large bottled beverages will also cost more, Fuji TV reported.

The price hikes precede the 10% consumption tax hike in October and will likely affect families’ household spending.

Meiji, the confectionery and dairy product manufacturer, will increase the prices of 23 products, including its Essel Super Cup series, whose suggested retail price will go from 140 to 151 yen. Meiji said in a statement, “We have tried to come up with possible measures that compensate for the rise in costs, but we found it difficult to continue selling products at our current prices.”

Pino, the bite-size ice cream snack by Morinaga Milk, will see an 11 yen increase to 152 yen. Ezaki Glico and Lotte are also facing increases in distribution costs and plan to hike ice cream prices.

Nippon Suisan will increase the price of fish paste products like chikuwa at a rate of 5-10%, while Nippon Flour Mills said its frozen food items will cost 5-13% more.

Coca Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory Beverage & Food have also decided to hike the prices of their beverages in April, for the first time in 25 years, with 2-liter bottles to cost 20 yen more.

There's Abe's third arrow, right up the clacker!

Yes, what could possibly go wrong ahead of this year's tax hike? My barber and fav coffee shop have already hiked prices too. As if things weren't already ridiculously overpriced. Can't wait to see all the economic indicators this fall, with analysts puzzled as to why people facing another regressive tax hike and lack of real-wage increases aren't spending more.

Yes please make everything more expensive since the prices are sooo low. And with my super well paid 240k job my life will be awesome.

Thank you Abe!

So who doesn't like Abenomics?

This is happening because people don't stand up and fight here, they just bend over and take it. So basically we will get two price raises this year. See how the economy will drop after this. And Abe will then just say to increase tourism to make up for it. What a farce this government.

Lol sneak in a tax hike, slap a different label on it. The lemmings will fall in line anyway.

@Yubaru - the government has been keeping the fact that the economy is not doing so well for the past 20 years

It’s not much of a secret to those suffering in a deflating economy (75% of the population). Just in the last 15 years salaries have decreased by 20-30% friending in the sector. Most of the workforce is on short-term contracts with no security, salary increases or long service benefits. Companies are making people work upwards of 100 hours per month in overtime, most of which is unpaid. Power harassment and intimidation is commonplace in all industries. Most people are uncertain about having a pension and when or if they can retire. Looking at how terrible the economic situation is, it’s easy to understand why child abuse and youth suicide are on the rise. Average people are really struggling and are taking out their stresses on their kids. As a result, many kids become disillusioned and take their own lives.

The recent scandal with statistic reporting by the government and these further price increases also prove that the government has been keeping the fact that the economy is not doing so well for the past 20 years and in many ways is far worse now than the years following the burst of the bubble!

Ahh - finally Abe's Sacred Cow of Inflation is revealing itself.

Now my family and millions of the other good citizens of Japan can enjoy the benefits as they flow steadily in.

Abe-Aso-Kuroda Inc must be all smiles this morning with hi-5s all round.

We did it.

Not.

YUP!!! Abenomics.. the gift that keeps on taking.. I MEAN GIVING! Excuse me.

There's Abe's third arrow, right up the clacker!

YUP!! I'm feeling the "LOVE"

Now my family and millions of the other good citizens of Japan can enjoy the benefits as they flow steadily in.

Yes!!!! I am waiting with hands clasped around my chest for the tax hike! Oh joy! Oh ecstacy.

Yeah gotta raise the price before the tax increase so that the amount of tax will be even more.

.

is there anyone with any sense of responsibility left in the Govt?

Seriously !!!

Where will people find the money to live - their salaries have not increased in accordance with the cost of living !?

With no retirement benefits, future is gloomy for most workers.

Buying power is never increasing.

Inflation is very sneaky with 10 yen here, 10 yen there to add to family budget.

Although yen rate is high against most currencies, imported materials/food cannot become cheaper. Or is limitef because of protective taxes for Abe's buddies.

Many countries with excessive milk production that Japan can't benefit. Too bad.

I know it's just wishful thinking, but I hope this encourages low waged employees to demand higher base pays. I really don' know how some single women living in Tokyo survive

Double dipping.. 1st a pre tax hike, then the tax hike comes in. A bonus hike to around rugby world cup and olympics. The every day person is getting bent over a barrel!

20 years ago a teacher's salary was more than enough to live off and you could save pretty much most of it. But salaries have remained stagnant while prices increase and government fat cats get richer.

This and the tax increase this year, will see places like Daiso do well. But people's diets will suffer on cheap cup ramen every other day!

Really!?! Try just about any supermarket, except maybe the tiniest with little shelf space.

Probably meant glass!

The plastic "bottles" have been around for a hell of a long time!

the +2% increase to 10% sales tax will of course have a knock on effect, plus the decline in the yen and added to the the Governments demand that Companies pay their employees more money to cater for the Tax increase... doh...

Strangely enough these products - all favorites during spring and summer - are the ones hike targeted... coincidence? - think not! GOJ really knows how to squeeze out your bottom yen, don't they?

I have never seen "2-liter bottles" in Japan...
