Rakuten, Lawson tie up on convenience store pickup service

Rakuten Inc and Lawson are collaborating on a pickup service that will allow customers to receive certain products purchased from the Rakuten Ichiba Internet shopping mall at the 11,299 Lawson convenience stores in Japan. The pickup service will be launched on Sept 1.

Customers who purchase certain products from participating stores on the Rakuten Ichiba and select convenience store pickup service as their chosen method of delivery will be able to pick up their products from their Lawson store of choice, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. By presenting the printed ticket, which can be acquired by inputting the inquiry number and authentication number included in the pickup e-mail from Rakuten Ichiba into a Loppi multimedia terminal located in Lawson stores, or the barcode that can be acquired from the pickup e-mail, customers can easily receive their products at the counter in the store.

Products will be delivered to the Lawson store by Japan Post. The merchants participating in the service will deliver the products as Japan Post Yu-Pack parcels, and as such, only products where the total of the length, width and height are less than 100cm are eligible for the service. Frozen or refrigerated products, products that require payment on receipt (payment of both cost of item and delivery fees), payment on delivery (payment of delivery fees only), or products that the customer wishes to be delivered at a specific date or time are excluded from the service.

As the Internet shopping market grows and the lifestyle of consumers diversifies, Rakuten has introduced a variety of pickup methods to meet the varied needs of its customers, including delivery locker services such as Rakuten Box, and the Hako Post operated by Japan Post. Lawson has built an open platform that allows other businesses to use its stores as a base, by utilizing its network of more than 10,000 stores nationwide for ordering, pickup and delivery.

Rakuten are slow to the game. Amazon has had this for a while. I think they support other stores besides Lawson as well. Only stuff shipped from Amazon's warehouses, though. This is convenient because sometimes my wife doesn't like to answer the door, so I can pick up my package on the way home from work. Its a pain to put in the number and wait for them to get the package, though. They seem to go back and forth 2-3 times, getting the package and printing out a receipt that you have to sign. There is a lot of room for improvement on speeding up the process.
