The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Japan (SpCCJ) has awarded its second “Spain Japan Business Contribution Award 2017” to Rakuten Inc at ENEKO Tokyo.

In 2016, the committee of the SpCCJ decided to recognise successful business relations between Spain and Japan through awards program, “Spain Japan Business Contribution Awards.” In this second year, the SpCCJ presented the award on Dec 1 to Rakuten for making outstanding contributions to the Spain-Japan commercial relationship.

Rakuten, founded in 1997 by Hiroshi Mikitani, is one of the world's leading internet services companies and has been ranked in the top 30 in Forbes’ annual list of The World's Most Innovative Companies since 2012. Rakuten offers e-commerce, fintech, digital content, and communications services to over 1.1 billion clients across the world. With a revenue of over $7 billion, Rakuten’s relation with Spain traces back to 2012, when it acquired Wuaki.tv (currently Rakuten TV).

On Nov 16, 2016, Rakuten announced a new partnership with FC Barcelona, one of the most famous Spanish football clubs in the world. And in the 2017-18 LaLiga season, Rakuten officially became FC Barcelona’s Main Global Partner and the first-ever Official Innovation & Entertainment Partner.

In parallel to this, Rakuten has been an active player in the Spanish start-up environment, with significant investment in Spanish mobility companies such as Cabify and Glovo. The SpCCJ said it believes this award to Rakuten will encourage and strengthen the business relations between these diverse countries and initiate new business opportunities.
