A Nissan need indeed! A few days ago, Nissan placed two cars (Altima and Kicks) on Consumer Reports’ most recent “10 Least Satisfying Cars to Own” list.

That's really interesting era name.

Until now, Renault Group of France owned 43.4% of Nissan Motor Co, while the Japanese automaker owned 15% of Renault.

This article doesn't mention about voting rights, after that "reboot" from 43.4% shares that Renault has, only 15% of shares have voting rights.  The rest 28.4% Nissan stake it will park in a non-voting trust.

The Renault-Nissan alliance, which started in 1999, was plunged into scandal when Ghosn, the executive sent by Renault to lead a turnaround at the then-near-bankrupt Nissan, was arrested in Japan in 2018 on financial misconduct charges.

If financial misconduct were prosecuted without fear nor favor 80-90 percent (conservatively) of Japan Inc. and the LDP would be jailed.

The long speculated changes to the carmaker alliance were announced a week ago. Shares equivalent to a 28.4% stake will be transferred to a French trust, according to the companies.

Technically, Renault under the French government can threaten to retrieve this stake from the French Trust at any time to resume years of making the life of Japanese elites miserable by vetoing every decision. France could continue annoying the Japanese like this as how Japanese elites staged a coup against Carlos Ghosn.

However, the Ukraine crisis upset everything for Renault as they were forced to pull out of Russia. Renault is short on time and cash, so it must bring Geely and Saudi Aramco to the new EV venture. Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, of course, are stubborn not to jump on the EV bandwagon.

Renault just needs to retrieve the patents from the Japanese alliance for the EV venture with China and Saudi. When Renault and its Chinese partners mastered the EV tech, then Renault would either ditch the stake of Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors to someone else or continue interrupting the Japanese decision-making in each company.

At this point, Japanese people don't give a damn about Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors as both brands have fallen so far behind everyone in Japan and the world. However, you just don't underestimate the sheer incompetence and stubbornness of Japanese elites who will go to any length to sustain the "Nihonjinron" myth even if they're broke.

Zorijushi is a recent example of Chinese shareholders having an ugly fight with a Japanese faction of old bureaucrats.

I know it'll make little difference. But I'll not buy Nissan ever again. The whole incident was so underhandedly discriminatory towards the foreigners working there.

You are correct but you forgot to mention that Altima and Kicks are made in Europe by Renault.

Is that only Nissan or any entity in Japan? There are other foreign executives of Japanese companies and none of them have had any legal trouble from "trumped up" charges in Japan. Besides, Ghosn has legal problems in other countries as well.

you forgot to mention that Altima and Kicks are made in Europe by Renault.

No. The U.S. version of the Altima is currently manufactured by Nissan in Canton, Mississippi. The U.S. version of the Kicks comes from Nissan's A2 facility in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

The Altima is also made by Nissan in China, and the Kicks by Nissan in Brazil, China, Taiwan, and Thailand.

What about the ones who keep buying Nissan Serenas, a top 10 selling car in Japan? 3 million yen plus a pop is giving a lot of a damn.

When the first Nissan Leaf electric car appeared, you could charge it overnight for 15 yen or so a kWh. The same overnight electricity in Dec 2022 was about 35 yen after the fuel adjustment, renewable subsidy, and 10% consumption tax. Charge the car during the day and you are looking at 50 yen a kWh. That's still cheaper per km than a gasoline car, but for a much higher purchase price and range anxiety/charging issues. The economics of this do matter to ordinary people, who won't change their behaviour based on what are already extremely mixed messages about the environment. The messages are mixed due to oil company propaganda and the (correct) issues with coal based electricity generation, mining of rare earths, etc.

I'll buy an electric car when it drives itself. That's the only feature I care about.

Try this one docs, it has more rating than that you mentioned.

You can see that there's possibility that Japanese company wouldn't exist today if it weren't because Renault willing to help. Renault won't help if Ghosn wouldn't willing in to accept in the first place.

Which he accepted and turn first profit from company that near bankruptcy in few years.

Reading the Consumer's guide safety rating of Nissan versus Subaru, Toyota and Honda (in that order) it is clear I am not going to consider a Nissan. I cannot be sure and have not verified this, but I have been told Nissans are actually built in Mexico which may or may not have something to do with their crash test results.

I drive an over 20year old Nissan Atlas 1 ton light truck with confidence for years, alas the local corrosion might finish this relationship in the next years to come.

And happy to hear about the French/German ministers joint efforts in the US this week.

You are correct but you forgot to mention that Altima and Kicks are made in Europe by Renault.

Nope. Not for the US market, which is where Consumer Reports is located. Altima is made in the US, and Kicks is made in Mexico.

Reading the Consumer's guide safety rating of Nissan versus Subaru, Toyota and Honda (in that order) it is clear I am not going to consider a Nissan. I cannot be sure and have not verified this, but I have been told Nissans are actually built in Mexico which may or may not have something to do with their crash test results.

The US market Kicks is made in Mexico. Not sure about other Nissan models, other than the Altima, which is made in the US.

Country of manufacture shouldn't affect safety, as the design and materials should be the same, regardless of where they are built.

Build quality, on the other hand, is a different story.
