Scandal of absent Ghosn hangs over Nissan at Tokyo Motor Show

Since Ghosn's arrest for alleged financial misconduct in November 2018, Nissan has sunk into deep losses and its global vehicle sales have tumbled.

In statements and comments on videotape, Ghosn has insisted that other Nissan executives plotted against him out of fears the company might lose some of its autonomy in a merger fears among some at Nissan of a fuller merger with its French alliance partner Renault SA.

Ghosn was released on bail after a dramatic months' long struggle with prosecutors who insisted he should stay in detention. 

He still can't even talk to his wife on the phone.

As I read this article, a number of thoughts came to mind.

-- No matter how Nissan tried to pretend otherwise, it is going to struggle without Ghosn at the helm. Mark my words.

-- And, as much as the Japanese hate to admit it, having a foreigner run Nissan with unquestioned authority was an antidote to the conservative groupthink that plagued the company before Ghosn was brought in.

-- The new CEO was internally promoted and does not come from the major shareholder. Which means he is going to have to do things the Japanese way, particularly as a Japanese. Sorry, but there is no way around that.

-- Which means he is going to have an uphill battle trying to steer the ship in any direction, particularly anything that involves vision and tough choices.

-- That is not to say that there weren't problems with corporate governance at Nissan, problems that very much needed to be addressed. Ghosn undoubtedly had carte blanche to do as he wished and I have no doubts that he abused that for his personal gain.

-- BUT, Saikawa and his friends in the J government did NOT go after Ghosn because of that. It was because Ghosn wanted to merge / integrate Nissan into Renault, which was an existential threat to the Japanese stakeholders. So, they conspired to force Ghosn out. Wareware Nihonjin and all that.

-- So, here Nissan is. With a diminished brand image, with no inspiring / iconic CEO, and no clear, coherent plan going forward.

It is going to be a tough road ahead for the company. And while that doesn't excuse any wrongdoing by Ghosn, Nissan J management and their buddies in the Japanese government deserve everything they get!!

Mr Ghosn rescued Nissan from its pits of economic hell and now Nissan is inching back to the pit again...

and where did you get your information, from the leaked information from the prosecutors office!? Ghosn is innocent until a judge or jury convict and sentence him for the crimes hes been ACCUSED of. Everybody in a 1st world democracy has the assumption of innocence until proven guilty , anybody who ASSUMES hes guilty before he has his day in court is as biased as theyre brainwashed. Make no mistake if the evidence is irrefutable by the prosecutors and jury / judge is convinced the evidence is foolproof then Ghosn can rot in jail for all I care.

Producing new models at motor show...................................that must be a joke for Nissan. Unless, Nissan starts to seriously get the inside of Nissan cleaned up and prove themselves to clean up plus admit that it was a Japanese bad method of operation, an inside job,nothing is going to sell. Consumers are not fools.

He is awaiting trial, likely not until next year, for allegedly falsifying financial documents to hide future compensation as well as charges of breach of trust in making dubious payments to businessmen for personal gain, according to Tokyo prosecutors.

Ghosn is waiting for the "judges" in Japan's kangaroo courts to rubber stamp the alleged charges listed above. Note, the article says "according to prosecutors". In the meantime his human tights are being abused, again rubber stamped by Japans so-called judges.

By the way, I cannot help but gloat at seeing Nissan's global sales tumble.

It's just not going away is it. (probably to the horror of the prosecutors office). Pleased to see that the Japanese attitude of : he's guilty, put him in detention, forget about him just isn't working so well.
