Money before lives.... so sad.

Bully comes in many forms! But this "owner" should have the common sense to know better too!

Owners have a union?

Seven-Eleven Japan Co said its rules state that franchise store owners should decide whether they continue store operations in times of disaster,

The decision is the owner's to make. Read the friggin manual. These snowfalls will become more regular so perhaps he should buy a front end loader and reinforce the roof.

Not really important but I never understood the whole "fall ill from exhaustion" thing they like to put in the JP news. How does one get ill from exhaustion? Seems like a fancy way to say the person was just really tired or so old/frail that menial labor causes them issues.

Stevie: I fell ill from exhaustion reading about it.

So the people at head office who told him he couldn't close didn't know the rules?

Fukui Prefecture saw a snowfall of 147 centimeters, the heaviest since 1981

That will be the snow depth. Peak snow depth in an average year in Fukui City is about 60cm, so they'll definitely be used to snow, just not in biblical amounts. In a built-up area like that, there will be limited space to pile it up. Snowblowers are best for people with no neighbours.

Gotta learn from the lessons of corporate disaster experiences. Instead of this being a negative story, if 7-11 headquarters had ferried out employees and supplies to keep open what was undoubtedly a neighborhood lifeline, it would have been a big plus.

fell ill from exhaustion

Now that's what I call true Japanese gaman or gambaru spirit.

people who were sent by the head office to help the store left after a few hours

And that's what I call useless.

I am not surprised. This is Japan. I suppose we should be thanking our lucky stars that neither the owner nor his wife died from overwork like the poor guy in his late 30s a couple of weeks back leaving behind a wife and 3 kids.

Laguna, true. However, they couldn’t ferry out employees and supplies because the road was blocked by 1500 mostly trucks and cars.

One would’ve thought he’d run out of either customers or supplies by hour 44.

Written rules?

No one cares about them. Companies operate based on unwritten “rules”.

Who precisely goes out in meters of snow to go to the 7-11 in the car? Nobody. !

The owners should have

closed the shop and waited a few days

I wonder if it would also make sense to keep the Store open, but with empty shelves because the delivery truck couldn't get through ?
