If Daiwa Securities and Mizuho Research can't be solidly profitable in today's climate of, respectively, roaring financial markets and a surge in demand for IT services, then they don't deserve to exist.

The decline in summer bonuses per employee, forecast by four think tanks and two security firms, follows a 2.6 percent fall in winter bonuses and a 0.5 percent increase in summer bonuses last year from year-earlier levels.
Four think tanks and two security firms, an impressive brain trust. Riddle me this, decades of productivity growth and monetary easing, booming capital gains and stocks and market fluctuations only seem to ever negatively effect wages and jobs?

Fat cats at the top still raking it in though!!

A bonus is what it says it is, a bonus. Extra on top! So considering the epic mess the world has been in, 1-3 % is peanuts, really
Well, it's not necessarily so when it comes to the Japanese definition of the word which more realistically reflects a WITHHELD PORTION OF AN EMPLOYEE'S SALARY to be paid back and paid out twice a year (but wrapped up in the guise of "a present" as a gesture of the dear company's benevolence). In the meantime, companies can enjoy the accruing interest in their piggy banks, innit?

Don't allow Japanese employers to fool you. That bonus is money you have earned. Also, those bonus tend to be anywhere from 2x to 4x your monthly salary. 1% to 3% missing is a lot. You shouldn't count people's money. Also, consider the amount of free overtime some people put in at their companies. Do you really feel that the bonus isn't theirs?

What you mean ? I read every year that the Japanese economy “ remains at a trajectory of slow but steady recovery “ don’t tell me that is not true?

Yup, and they probably would have retired last March but Covid-19 gave them an excuse to stay on longer given their many years of experience.

I don't suppose any of those in the public sector (politicians, bureaucrats, etc.) will see any dip at all. Rather, they will probably get more than last year. I hope not.

As someone who has never had a bonus in my whole life, I have one thing to say - cry me a river.

Meanwhile, Taro at the Yakitori joint has ...lost his job-no bonus and no job...

Yep, I've never had a summer bonus. Stop whining.
