Considering this is a law it's less about Suzuki and more because they didn't have a choice.

Its very bad situation in India, and good to see some Japanese auto makers support.

But there is other auto maker pushing their suppliers having develpment centres in India to work hard not only to avoid delays but recover any delays so far during golden week holidays.

What if Japan runs out of Oxygen?

I highly doubt Suzuki is buying oxygen fin Japan and exporting it all the way to India, it would make little economical sense. Most probably it is manufactured locally in India.

India's daily production capacity of industrial oxygen is 7287 metric tonnes.

The daily requirement for oxygen has now risen to more than 8000 MT. So the daily shortfall is around 800 MT if all industrial oxygen produced is diverted to medical use. This also means that critical industries will have to shut down for lack of oxygen. The cases are increasing exponentially and so will this deficit.

The oxygen reserves in storage are around 55000 MT. India had also exported 9301 MT of oxygen across the world between April 2020 and January 2021.

One year was sufficient time to expand daily production capacity as well as storage capacity. Failure of leadership at all levels to foresee and plan accordingly.

India required use of all oxygen to patients, not car company officials.

It is not about urging, asking politely for but demanding.

Suzuki and Honda just complied. Don't make it sound like they were heartily helping locals, that is not true.

While Maruti Suzuki stills commands 46% of the market share, It's cars when rated on performance, build quality, safety standards are behind the competition and as such only budget folks buy these cars, there smallest car Alto has is/has been the best seller.

Everyone else goes for South Korean, Indian, European, American cars.. eg.. Hyundai cars are so high in demand that there is wait period of 2-3 and even 6-9 months based on which model you want to buy, as far Suzuki there is no wait period as demand is simply not there.

The Suzuki Baleno Sedan and Grand Vitara SUV would have been great sellers had Suzuki released newer version with all the latest feature set, just like Hyundai does, but it downgraded both, which when compared to the competition nobody wants to buy, they do sell in the budget market but that market is shrinking as more and more now look at performance, build quality and safety standards/rating..and not just the mileage, the competition anyway provides similar mileage.

They will only get good publicity when they release new models which are rated high on performance, build quality and safety standards..but given the management still stuck in the small cars sales figures is unlikey to happen.

That leadership has been/is working fine in a centralized model..the de-centralized model where-in the states had to prepare for the oxygen production capacity and were found wanting is the issue, some were prepared, other were not..oxygen production setup is not a year long endeavor, the states were given the funds late last year and many ..especially the opposition rules states simply did not setup these oxygen plants.

India's oxygen surplus states are Jharkhand, Odisha and Chattisgarh. All of these are steel production hubs and have sufficient oxygen supply to meet their needs. All of them are opposition ruled states. These states are also sending their surplus oxygen production to oxygen deficit states like Gujarat, MP, Bihar and Maharashtra. Out of these 4 states only one is opposition ruled.

Finally, all this obfuscation and deflection does not address the core issue which is also related to this article. That if industrial oxygen is diverted to medical use in an emergency critical industries need to shut down. The longer the medical emergency is prolonged the longer will these plants have to remain shut, ultimately impacting industrial production and overall economic growth.

Well Modi is not the CM of the states..the states need to setup additional capacity for which they were provided funds late last year, nice subterfuge but very evident.. so both in the short and long term this works

My worry is this, is industrial oxygen such as that intended for steel making clean enough to use for medical purposes? My experience is that, for example, a bottle of welding oxygen cannot be substituted for a bottle of medical oxygen, say for someone who needs to use oxygen at home. Are the bottles being used clean enough for medical use? No residues inside? Just asking. Seems like in the rush to find oxygen some basic safety considerations are not being addressed.

A Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) would not be able to make steel without oxygen. It is blown into the steel with a water cooled probe at very high pressures and speeds as part of the process that turns iron into steel. BOFs have largely replaced the old Bessemer process for modern steel makers.

Steel plants produce Liquid Medical Oxygen and to do so they need to sacrifice some production of industrial oxygen. Industrial Oxygen can not be used directly for medical purposes.

Ireland has sent 100 respirators that suck up existing oxygen outside, and is thus not dependant on sepaerate supply. Great practical idea also. But the problem is horrendous for India. God help them all.

Ireland is actually sending 700 (seven hundred) Oxygen Concentrators to India.

Just to correct that posting I made above.

Oxygen Concentrators draw oxygen from the air and deliver it to the patient at over 90% concentration.

Ireland has a population of less than 5million. That is a very substantial donation from such a small country.
