WHY?! Being the Japanese "Market" is just as closed to outside imports as it ALWAYS has, why change this NOW?

Average consumption of beef in Taiwan is now over 5kg per person per year.

Just like in nominally Buddhist Japan, religion appears to have very little influence.

I certainly don't eat 5 kilos of beef a year....

Anyway, I can't understand why on earth they would import from the US but not Japan if it is ACTUALLY about the risk of mad cow. If it were a slap on Japanese companies for mislabelling, overcharging, and also a reaction to Japan's own import limits, I can see it.
