At a minimum they deserve better pay. Probably should double the 300 yen.
Jacek Adamczyk
The demand is definitely higher for uber eats like services. Some people loose their jobs altogether.
But, yeah, uber eats should sacrifice some of its profits and invest in protection measures, like free masks, sprays etc for their delivery persons.
JonathanJo
Perhaps hazard pay for health workers too.
rgcivilian1
Get another job, before they get replaced by drones in the very near future anyway.
savethegaijin
Anyone who is deemed essential during the pandemic who can't work at home should get hazard pay.
I bet some of these out of touch oyaji bosses refusing to let their workers telework would suddenly jump at the chance if they were otherwise forced to shovel out hazard pay.
Yubaru
Sorry, but for some reason I just can not imagine that these drivers or delivery service folks for Uber are working on the "front line'!
The dedicated doctors, nurses and medical staffs, and people taking care of those with this virus THEY are the one's who deserve "hazardous" pay! They are literally putting their own lives, and the lives of their loved one's at risk, day in and day out!
This is just an emotional plea for more money!
Kuro neko takyubin, and other delivery companies are doing probably 1000's of times more deliveries everyday than these Uber folks, and their chances of getting the virus are much higher as well, yet no one hears about them complaining or trying to play on the emotions of people for more money!
Get off the soap boxes, if you feel THAT threatened, you do have a choice! QUIT!
Yubaru
The people who are considered "essential" outside of first responders and medical types, are the people on the low end of the totem pole! Hourly PT workers in convenience stores, supermarkets, and the like, are now suddenly "essential".
So what does that say about all the people who are sitting at home "teleworking?"
rainyday
Your interpretation of that fact is to tell the Uber Eats workers to shut up.
Mine is to tell the Kuro Neko Takyubin workers to join the Uber Eats ones in demanding more pay.
They all deserve it.
Yubaru
Bull, they dont deserve anything more than what they are getting! This is just the same as stores marking goods up in price because of the "season", and excuse to make more money!
These folks SHOULD be happy! They are getting more work than before, because their services are now needed. Not to mention too that the roads have fewer vehicles, less pedestrian traffic as well. They are nothing "special" and they certainly dont deserve hazardous pay!

Is it the same Uber Eats that didn't want to pay insurance to their workers not so long time ago?
I believe so, they shouldn't get a dime.

Ha ha, hazard pay. Food delivery is a luxury, not an essential service. They aren't a delivery service for the elderly and physically disabled.
Tokyo TT
I would question if Uber isn't being targeted for being a foreign company. I am sure they wouldn't go after Demaekan or Yamato / Sagawa...
ian
I guess the union reps must be paying themselves hazard pay for rendering essential services at this time
ian
Uber isn't being targeted for being a foreign company. It's being "targeted" because the union represents uber workers
rainyday
Yes, they do.
Not just because of Covid19, but always. Our economy screws gig workers over a million ways to one. If they can get better pay because of this from a bloodsucking company like Uber that refuses to give workers a living wage, good on them.
Tey Dela Cruz
Living wage as a non-skilled job? Seriously? Someone who rides a bike or walks to deliver food should be paid $15/¥1500 or more per hour? I'd like to live on the planet you come from.
Arhans
Hey, the ubereats delivery partner ask to the company not the japanese gov. Why bothering you? .. if kuroneko employee didn’t ask for additional hazardous fee during delivery, that’s their own problem..
Arhans
Do you know That Tokyo metropolitan area is Prohibited to flying drone??? .. and mostly uber eats in tokyo deliver at that area. So if you want to deliver food by drones, you should try at Japan’s countryside..
Yoyogi59
Kento Suzuki, vice chairman of the union with some 30 members,
Out of 15,000 Uber Eats deliverers in Japan?
rainyday
Yeah, seriously, we should pay people who work for a living enough to survive, even if they are doing menial jobs.
Yubaru
Right, give them all full hazmat suits! That would be uber doing due dilligence!
Sneezy
Solidarity with the workers.
All power to the unions.
Sneezy
Yes. Without them people go hungry. The non-skilled are the most essential members of society. They should be compensated as such.
Kobe White Bar Owner
I’d agree but around here they ride like such arrogant sods I have no sympathy for them. Like my cockney mar would say, ya made ya bed now lay in it!

Delivery workers come into contact with many people during their working day. With that in mind their employers should be adjusting the delivery process to enable social distancing and providing workers with disposable gloves, masks, and hand sanitiser.
If UberEats aren’t providing safety equipment, they should pay their workers extra so they can buy the supplies they need.

Hazard Pay ? Hah !
Uber Eats, did not even offer Cycle Injury protection...
So if an "Uber Eats" Self-employed Contractor crashes into you or your Kids, you can't sue them, as you will only be able to sue the Contractor, who has diddly sh1t to pay you back with...
"Uber Eats" and their likes are a disease upon Employment. They need to be regulated like the rest and not to get away with their crappy styles of working. I know some Kids even working for them... so I wonder if Child Labour Laws are being broken or ... simply at best flouted.
mmwkdw
Ask yourself... who are the Uber Eats deliver people ?
They can be anyone. Not tied to the Restaurant that they're delivering from.. so if there's something wrong with what you receive, you can't blame the Restaurant (apart from the fact they chose to use "Uber Eats" (or another Service, rather than their own). I think, if you want to be careful, choose Restaurants that offer their own Delivery Service - that way, we know, they will be careful, with Uber Eats... it's just another Delivery boy, and they don't care. Think about that.. carefully. ... Really Carefully.

I don't like taking deliveries where I have to sign for stuff these days... but Japan still, hasn't seen the opportunities for moving forward beyond signatures - in which I have to hold a bit of paper held by another, and potentially sign using another's pen... certainly not a contactless society - in these days more troubling.
Much could be done to improve the situation for delivery workers both at home, and abroad, And I simply don't understand why that's not been done todate.,,, Pizza Delivery Companies/"Uber Eats" could do a whole lot better in that respect, packages being delivered could even only be opened by the recipient.. but, no... we've seen videos, etc of independent "contractors" doing things that would make us "Puke" after realizing what they've delivered to us. "Delivery Security" is the next thing... to consider. And "Uber Eats", etc.... needs to get real.
mmwkdw
Likewise, the consumer!
Tey Dela Cruz
Sorry to burst your fantasy bubble, but people are paid what they are worth in terms of value to the hiring company (as well as what they are willing to accept). That includes EVERYONE who works for a living - delivery food person, bus driver, police officer, teacher, doctor, lawyer, ceo.
Tey Dela Cruz
People go hungry in Japan if they can't get food delivered by Uber? You can say that with a straight face? You mean the same people who also walk to the train each day, walk to grocery stores, have kitchens, eat out with friends, etc? THOSE people will go hungry? Ha ha ha ha.
mmwkdw
Also.... all forms of unregulated home delivery services should be stopped during this virus pandemic.. not doing so is stupid... think about it ... one delivery person, carries the virus door to door how many times ???? is that safe ?
