It's not like the major reason they came in the first place, was Thatcher's "promise" that Japanese companies would have unfettered access to the wider EU market, was it!

Surely it would be a lot easier to start with a clean cut, hard brexit, then negotiate trade and other agreements with same concern that the Europeans are using to delay Brexit. For example, the subsequent imposition of a hard-border between Northern Ireland and the South, may motivate certain European Nations to come up with a compromise solution that would be appealing to all.
