Toyota considers new re-employment system for over-60-year-old employees

Toyota Motor Corp (Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture) is considering the implementation of a new re-employment system in which its over 60-year-old employees can engage in tasks such as cleaning and mowing. Currently Toyota is rehiring about 70% of its retired employees under the condition that there are no problems with job performance and health prospects.

However, under the new law (Revision Concerning Stabilization of Employment of Older Persons), which takes effect in April, hiring all retired employees who wish to be re-employed will be mandatory. By creating various opportunities, Toyota aims to establish a stable working environment in which re-hired employees can work without feeling uneasy.

Amid Japan’s aging population, more and more companies have been required to provide a variety of options for senior citizens so that they can continue working with enthusiasm. Toyota's attempt is likely to attract the attention of many companies as one of the most effective models of re-employment.

I would be interested in knowing the kinds of jobs these seasoned citizens are re-employed in. For the majority it would be good if they could do jobs similar to what they did before retiring. If it is all just make-work programs then expect depression to be a problem.
