Amazing how little details Toyota give out for this.

The company showed a diagram illustrating that an extra part could be added to the bolt to secure it in place. A picture is worth a thousand words. This article however omits Toyota's vital picture so the gentle reader is left to scratch their head over the nature of the fix.

Amazing how little details Toyota give out for this. I would suggests that their PR department is asleep. You don't want to Boeing a safety problem, you want to reassure to customers that you have nothing to hide AND provide minute details of the problem and the fix.

Mystifying. Every wheel on every car in the world is attached with bolts and nuts. That is why we tighten them up.

There are a couple of different ways to hold a wheel on a hub and variations of these. Some cars use threaded studs attached to the hub and retain the wheel with nuts. Some cars center the wheel on a flange protruding from the hub and use long bolts that thread into the hub to hold the wheel in place. On those if the center hole of the wheel is not very tight against a flange on the hub the bolts can eventually work loose. Many modern cars have sheet metal covers over lug nuts for appearance but those sheet metal covers can deform and make it hard to get the right torque setting on the nut.

In this instance the wheels are centered on the hub and held on with long bolts. Toyota is changing the bolts and adding a washer which I presume is some sort of lock washer. It is hard to read the translations but I think the change may include different wheels so the lug bolts seat more fully against the wheel.

So what was different this time that necessitated an extra nut lock?

Beyond Zero! What a laugh. Does it sequester carbon as it runs?

@Desert

Can you post your source please. The diagram I can see just shows 'new' wheel bolts and I also assume it's replacing the original wheel studs/cap nuts.
