Takata is playing with fire with all these recalls, if I were a automaker I think I would be looking for a different supplier.

The dispute is similar to the Firestone issue where parent company Bridgestone argued against a recall and Ford went forward on its own to replace tires with potentially faulty treads that could separate and cause an accident. The supplier was fighting the recall, and it was the automaker that took the bull by the horn.

If it was my car, I'd trust my local Toyota dealer - who I have a relationship with already - rather than Takada, who'll be looking to do the job as cheaply as possible.
A B2B business attempting one-off B2C transactions? Dream on.

Why are the consumers not given the option to forego the installation of these potentially life-threatening devices? They should be optional.

They save thousands more lives than they kill. You could ask the same about seatbelts. The lap belt can cause internal injuries in a head-on collision.

Big pillow is safer than takata bags that has metals inside I think. Toyota recall may costly but Toyota sales will be way up now, Good decision. Hope Nissan, Mitsubishi, Matsuda follow Toyota's practice.

At least four deaths in the U.S. have been linked to faulty airbags made by Takata. Takata estimates that around 12 million vehicles around the globe may contain the parts. So thats 4 out of 12,000,000 or one death for every three million cars? Since ten major auto manufacturer uses Takata air bags, they should to try to work together to identify the safety problem and make suggestions of design changes.

All Japanese auto makers should address this issue when the yen is still in their favor.

Airbags have prevented so many people in car accidents from harm’s way, that have been proven based on world automobile accident data. In other words, the function of airbag as an effective safety measure should not be doubted.
Takata’s defective airbags must be replaced ASAP because those airbags could kill innocent people. This is just cut and dry, Takata as a reputable Japanese company should own the issue and make necessary amendment instead of dragging its cold feet.

Let me know how your going to replace 12,000,000 air bags. If you talk about innocent people being killed, GM truck with side mounted gas tank killed over 1500 people from 1970's to 2000. Compare that with 4 out of 12,000,000 cars that is on the road? If safety is so important, where was the goverment during the GM truck incident to protect the public?
Under the NHTSA statute, only manufacturers of motor vehicles and replacement equipment are required to decide in good faith whether their products contain a safety-related defect, and if so, to conduct a recall. If they wanted to demand a recall, it should have been sent to the auto manufacturers.

I'd like to see the option to NOT have airbags required.
