All of this because people can't tell the accelerator from the brake?

The brake pedal is on the left side to the accelerator pedal.

Respectfully in regard to the whole "oops they mistook the pedals" jokes:

"unintentional acceleration in vehicles equipped with electronic throttle control systems, which connect the accelerator to the engine."

It's all computer/digital. A simple glitch in the program is all it could take for the computer to accelerate when it isn't supposed to.

In the multidistrict litigation, plaintiffs attorneys are moving forward with the second bellwether case, brought on July 8, 2010, by a woman in Columbus, Ga., who suffered spinal fractures after her 2005 Camry accelerated into a column near the door of an elementary school gymnasium.

“She stopped at a stop sign. She looked both ways, and then just as she started to enter the intersection her vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control and went straight onto the property of the elementary school and accelerated through a grove of trees, past a fence and eventually slammed into the school gymnasium,” Walburg said. “She clearly testified that she tried to hit the brakes multiple times, and the vehicle would not stop.”

The driver, Ida St. John, who was 83 years old at the time of the 2009 accident, has since died, leaving the case in the hands of her estate, according to court documents filed on December 17. Walburg said he is investigating whether St. John’s death was tied to injuries she suffered during the crash.

Old age is the cause of her accident and her death, not the car.

Let them sort this out in the courts.

Even NASA Engineers found nothing defective in ECU of effected Toyota models. The same ECU models are still in those models and nothing hears about further accident in US. It had happened in US only even though Toyota sold those models to world wide. Obviously they wanted to kill Toyota Brand name. Toyota 1.6 Billions Dollars settlement was bad decision from Company. In Australia, some VW cars models have problem with suddenly engine death on road. One lady had died from accident but VW didn’t take action for recalling defected car models for more than a year. VW knew defective in their cars. Their engineers found defective in Transmission and recalled in China and Japan. Contrast to unintentionally acceleration in Toyota cars, there is no evidence about defected in ECU. I believe the accident is pure driver’s mistake. I do not accept car can not slow down or can not stop because of defective ECU. In Australia, drivers have causing crashes in parking lot and on the road by pressing on accelerator instead of brake pedal. Every crash was inspected by crash unit. They found evidence of drivers’ mistake between accelerator and brake pedal in panic. Toyota Company has poorly handle the unintentionally acceleration case in US. Next law suit will be class action from Toyota share holders for mishandling unintentionally acceleration case in US.
