Toyota Motor Corp has employed a side airbag having a three-bag structure for the new Camry mid-size sedan.

Toyota developed the side airbag in cooperation with Toyoda Gosei Co Ltd. The new Camry was released in July. The previous product has a two-bag structure using bags for protecting the chest and waist of a passenger.

The new product uses three bags for protecting the shoulder/rear chest, waist and front chest, improving passenger protection performance at the time of an accident.

A side airbag has a function to prevent the user's body from crashing into the door, side window, etc at the time of an accident. Because it is installed on the window side of each seat, the Camry is equipped with four side airbags.

The three-bag structure makes it easy to control the amount of gas flowing into each bag. After deploying the two bags for the shoulder/rear chest and waist, the bag for the front chest is inflated with a low internal pressure. As a result, the new air bag can reduce load on the chest of a passenger, compared with the previous product, Toyota said.

Toyota also succeeded in increasing deployment speed by making it easier to flow gas generated by the inflator to each bag.
