Well offer to lower tariffs on US auto imports or something. I can’t imagine if your strongest point in negotiation is that “this would hurt our businesses.”

@quercetum: by "US auto imports", do you mean the import of US autos into Japan? There are no tarriffs on US auto imports to Japan. But we could put a big tarriff on them. Oh, wait, US autos don't sell in Japan.

It used to be 15%. The point is asking our government to lower tariffs in other industries and negotiate instead saying our businesses will be hurt. There are non-tariff measures in the US-Japan auto industry, because negotiations.

"We are on the losing side of almost all trade deals. Our friends and enemies have taken advantage of the U.S. for many years. Our Steel and Aluminum industries are dead. Sorry, it’s time for a change! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Donald Trump

The only friends the US has are those that they have threatened, coerced and bullied.

When will Japan exert its sovereignty? Tell trump to withdraw the tariffs or remove US bases from Japan; show some guts.

I thinkl that it has taken a long time for the penny to drop here. For the last 30 years America has regarded Japan as a partner. Japan has regarded America as a competitor.

This makes the current status quo incompatable. It is time for big change, and it is good that America have a strong President who can inact these changes.

It would be more effective for Japan to cancel their orders for F35s and military hardware from the States.
