If the USPS doesn't set their pricing to make a small profit from Amazon, I think we know where the stupidity lies. Hint: it isn't in Amazon.

Agree. It is up to USPS to set the price to make a profit. amazon can then decide whether to use them or an alternative.
wonder which one of the Trump entourage was short amazon before this all kicked off.

Am I to understand that the USA, owns a postal service?
You must be kidding me.

fxgai - the USPS began as a govt delivery service because delivery to difficult places was important and there weren't any commercial options with routine service for 170 yrs. It was something only the govt could do. The USPS is what remains and provides daily mail pickup and drop off nation-wide, except to wilderness locations. Daily is Mon-Sat.
The USPS isn't quite a Govt department, since use fees should pay for everything, not taxes. Fraud through the mail is a federal offense, so if you are doing something illegal, like scamming people, don't use the mail to avoid extra jail time. Tampering with mail is also a federal offense. If I put something "secret" into a letter and mail it, the chance that someone outside the intended person (or someone else in the intended household) will open it is extremely tiny. Sending cash for Xmas or birthday presents is common, unlike many other countries. I've experienced only 2 lost letters in my life.
Sending a normal letter from anywhere to anywhere in the USA costs the same $0.50 in 2018. That's pretty amazing. Alaska, Hawaii, NY, FL, TX, anywhere in the 9.8 million km2. For most addresses, it is just 2-4 days for delivery.

People still send letters? That’s kind of romantic I guess :)

Hmm... Perhaps Trump should be chum up with Jack Ma, and let Alibaba have a free romp around the US ?

Yes. It is part of manners. A thank you note for a gift or an invitation to an important even, like a wedding? Letters are how that is supposed to be done.
Plus, people like me won't use email for business as a consumer. I don't want companies thinking that my email or phone numbers should be used for their business purposes. They get a street address and can mail anything they want me to know, including bills.
BTW, there is a method to my madness.
