Japan's imported wheat price to hit 14-year high

Wheat going up which mean bread and noodle will go up too. Gasoline price already hight. So inflation is in Japan now, Abenomics have been waiting for this for years. Now is coming!

One thing though...With the disruption of oil supplies J.Gov was quick to jump in with massive subsidies to oil companies and distributors.

So in this case, cuts to the taxes on food stuffs, rebates and subsidies for the public incoming?

I wouldn't wait.

Time to plant more wheat then. Never understood the need to import food. Fossil fuels and ores i understand but never food. We never lack food. In fact we waste a lot of food in my opinion.

In other words, no one can really escape that Putin. Strong or weak Russian military or sanctions applied economy isn’t the criteria here. If he ever should start reaching out for you, and surely he just did, then you are severely hit one way or another, wherever far away from him you managed to flee. That demon gets and catches you once or multiple times, health, life, money, career, employment, food…anyhow you’re affected wherever on this planet.

I just wonder if rice can substitue. In fact, there is bread made of rice, and some taste good or pretty indistinguishable.

Anyway, I think I can survive by cutting calorie intake for a while. Life without wheat (or with high-priced food products) is definitely better and more bearable than one forced to take cover and hide under shelter. It's another way of my supporting quick war end and reconstruction in Ukraine.

Japan need to ditch the tender system by MAFF to purchase wheat. MAFF adds a "mark up" or tax to the wheat they purchase by tender which drives the price up.

Wheat and therefore wheat products would be cheaper in Japan if importers bought it themselves without having to purchase via MAFF.

And for those who think Japan can just grow more wheat, the climate in Japan in not suitable for growing wheat for pan bread, wheat grown in Japan is mostly low quality winter wheat used for local noodle production. The high humidity and rain does not help the production of high quality wheat in Japan.

Australian Hard, ND HRS, US WW and CWRS are imported for pan breads. Australian Premium White is imported for high quality fresh and instant noodles and U.S. Western White is imported for cakes and cookies.

Durum is also almost all sourced from North America and almost impossible to grow in Japan because of fusarium head blight.

Word was out that the price of flour was set to rise even before the war started. I bought in extra, should be good for a few months.

Yotsubakai Coop has Hokkaido-grown bread flour, I find it's pretty good.

The Coop also do Canadian bread flour, that's also pretty good. And a lot of the bread they carry (the soft white fluffy kind) is made using domestic flour. I don't think I've ever seen Australian flour for sale in the shops here. I assume you're talking about commercial bakers, not home bakers.

Japan needs some neoliberal reforms here!

Tax payers don’t want to be funding farm ministry bureaucrats to meddle with buying and selling of imported wheat!

The free market is capable of setting prices for scarce commodities by itself!!

we waste a lot of bread anyways because of all the bread stores made after the rising popularity.

If food wasn’t imported in Japan then there would be a massive shortage every now and then due to the large population size. Haven’t you seen butter, milk, meat even banana ( although so much imported from Philippines ) shortages in Japan. Also if it wasn’t for imports then locally produced food in Japan would be way overpriced as no competition or alternative available. Not to mention that Japan is disaster prone and hit by many typhoons yearly and this leads to shortage in farming vegetables as well as dairy! The supply chain is also disrupted. Then flooding, earthquakes, nuclear plant issues, and the impending Fuji mountain eruptions will all make local food production close to nil! Bottom line is it’s easier to say no need for imported food but rather impossible to do so in a country where the population size is more than 125 million!

Any farm or dairy product labeled as produced in Hokkaido automatically becomes the safest, most delicious

and best product that everyone is willing to pay a premium to eat. Hokkaido Produce is a magic word.

This makes no sense. The summers here are too hot, and wet in the rainy season, to grow wheat, and there isn’t anywhere near enough land to do it at scale.

Thanks to Abenomics, it permanently destroyed Japan's REER through the currency devaluation. Many economists in Yahoo Japan have pointed out that this policy has turned Japan into a developing country.

@drlucifer I would agree that milk in Japan is delicious, it contains slightly more fat than homogenized milk in North America, giving it more taste. As far as "safety" goes, I'm not sure what you are referring to. Japan uses significantly more a.i. of pesticides per hectare than North America. There is however, a good chance that the dairy herd in Japan is fed a ration that includes high quality canola meal, a by-product of crushing imported canola seed from Canada, and other fodder such as compressed forages from Canada.

Depending on the person that likes to drink milk. Not everyone is into the heavy homogenized thick fatty milk.

Japan’s egregious 8%-10% tax on food ensures that the poor will spend more of their money on lower priced food of less nutritional value.
