And gold per gram topped 10000 yen

Everyrhing is getting more expensive and Kazuo Ueda thinks that 2% inflation is in sight

Japanese Comedy Gold!

Bwaaa ha ha ha ha !

I hear that Russia is selling some bargain oil...

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

It's obvious that they will cut output slowly but further.

Indeed, for Russia it's a no-brainer. They can make more money at a higher price while exporting less.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

On one hand Ueda does everything to create inflation on the other hand the government give subsidies to alleviate the consequences… At the end of the day we will end up with a mix of higher inflation and higher taxes!

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Other factors driving the gas price to an all-time high in Japan include recent cuts of oil output by major producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia

Bull! It's ALL about the yen losing value and making imports cost more! Quit trying to sugar coat the reality..

That's just over £1 per litre - here in the UK petrol at my local supermarket is around £1.45 per litre - around ¥268 per litre... I think ¥185.60 is a bargain

You need to consider the exchange rate. It's high at the moment.

Yay for the gas increase

The savings in fuel costs compared to the UK are immediately wiped out the second you go onto a motorway here - the tolls are ridiculously expensive, for motorways that are often nothing more than a dual carriageway. You have no choice but to use them when trying to cover any distance because all other roads have traffic lights every 100 meters.

Get an EV ladies and gentlemen, got the message??

There is NO other ways around it, but Toyota Honda and Nissan still think that combustion engines will sell and so they continue to SHOVE down the consumers throats. Until we reverse the situation they are not going to change.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Chinese EV's are in Russia and south America and slowly but surly penetrating the EU markets and recently the U.S. market, it wont be long before the start appearing on Tokyo streets if not already, Saudi Arabia and Russia are chocking us and Toyota, Honda, and others are helping them.

Switzerland 95 unleaded : 1.85 CHF... that's way over 300 yen..

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Bizarrely, bottled water is even more expensive! Use a vending machine? Over 200¥ a liter. Often much more. I’ve seen “boutique” water in Tokyo at 500¥ for 500ml.

go figure?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

It was 201 yen this morning in Nishi Azabu…

You ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until the government stops subsidizing gas prices in September.

This is a good example of referring to an exception that should be ignored.

Here it is ; "the effects of a weaker yen".

The predicted effect of Abenomics' broken arrows.

When the J-Gov aggressively manipulated the currency, the price of oil was very low but would inevitably return to higher ("normal") levels. Now, the double-whammy is hitting, driving many OTHER prices higher and higher.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

It's litre.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

It's litre.

Yes it is but Japan uses US spelling hence liter.

Honestly, good, where I live it's just people driving around all day ruining the environment. I don't want them to have to suffer financially of course but some type of deterrent so they think twice before driving I think is a very good thing in 2023.

I ride my bike all the time, even when I don't feel like it, I take the car to do groceries or when absolutely required. I think more people should be doing this personally.

...the other day a plumber came to my house to do some work, he drove back to his home to get parts about 5 times, it was ridiculous, this might force him to actually plan the job.

I think it's hilarious that many comments are aimed at the Japanese government and on the other side if the Pacific Americans are blaming that government for high fuel costs.

How about blaming the oil producing nations? It's their greed that causes client nations to make decisions based on their needs and goals.

Oh like the UK doesn't have hidden extras, ULEZ mean anything? £12 a day to drive in London and they just expanded it!

How about blaming the sanctions that started all this!

How about blaming the oil producing nations?

They are perfectly entitled to charge whatever they like. One of the benefits of owning hard assets. Its not their fault the Western world has set itself up for yet another economic shitshow.

Big Oil is making massive profits.

The good time that gasoline cost less than water is history.

nice result of Kishidas trip some weeks ago to UAE and Saudi Arabia.well done Fumio...

India,China and many other countries have no this issues since buying oil at discounted prices from Russia but Japan have "values"... :(

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Then lower the taxes. The government gave suppliers key instead of actual people. Lord the tax system is so high on gas here it’s ridiculous. The cause is the government and their greed

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The numbers Sales tax 10% and 53 yen per liter are the taxes on gas here. That’s amazing. 20 liters @185.60 = 3,712 yen and taxes make up 1,431 yen 39% of the price is taxes. What needs to change is easy to know. And on top of that the government should be negotiating better prices and reducing tariffs which we don’t even see.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Highest ever? Are they sure about that? I recall it getting up over ¥200 per liter in the mid-2000’s.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I can understand why locals are up in arms about this increase. Being a frequent visitor to Japan for the last 20 years, fuel prices is always cheap compared to the UK. A litre of 'regular' at the reported price is a little over a £1 at the current exchange rate, it's currently around £1.55 a litre in the UK. Last winter I was paying £1.80 per litre. It's bad but it could be a lot worse...

Get a kei car!

No range anxiety and they sip fuel.

I drive everywhere in the summer

2 ( +5 / -3 )

206¥/l for high octane...and still rising.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

It'll be ¥220 by October, guaranteed. I feel sorry for you suckers who keep depending on such fuel. You think massive profits by the companies involved are going to help them invest in greener energy? Nope. Get ready for ¥250-¥300 next year.

But hey, didn't they say expressway tolls may become free in 90 years?

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

You need to consider the exchange rate. It's high at the moment.

No, it’s not. It used to be ¥250 for £1 back in 2008 or so. The current ¥180 is not that bad at all.

Not a great savings in Japan.

A Nissan leaf 60kWh will take 1 hour on rapid charge in a public charging station!

At ¥55 per minute so to fully charged a 60kWh Leaf will cost ¥3,300 and the max distance if you are lucky will be 340km.

My 10 year old Prius gets in average 22km/L, I just filled up at a self service at ¥175/L ( remember ¥185 is average that includes full service stations at a far higher price).

So ¥3,300 is around 18L even at ¥185 that is still 17L.

At 22km/L I can travel between 374Km and 396km for that same ¥3,300 and not need to wait an hour to charge my car.

The only savings may be if you charge at home which takes several hours, but remember this will increase your home electrical bill over the different price levels to the top tier if ¥41kWH charge which will then apply to you entire house use.

Why?

The average K-car gets around 27~28km/L and are terrible on the highway!

A Prius will get the same if not better without the tiny size and with far better safety especially on highways where they get even better fuel economy!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

There we have the consequences of this government circus that spends its time thinking more about Ukraine than about ITS OWN PEOPLE, the same idiocy that good old Joe is doing...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Sure, if you get paid a UK salary in Japan. Everything is cheap then.

Agreed, I barely work 35 hours a week for 8M gross salary. That's part time Japanese hours.

Defeating Russian terrorism is more important than gas prices.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The easy solution tried and tested is to print more money and subsidise the gasoline so we can all enjoy. Your kids will pay back that loan. They wont mind because they dont know.

…….

Just don't have any sort of an accident in a Kei car...you,ll be lucky if you can walk away with just an injury. Whilst cheap to run they are deathtraps on wheels....hence why they,d never pass safety standards in the western world and are only sold in Japan. Hybrids are a way to go.

….

My fuel economy is much better than a Prius as my car is much lighter

Highways?

I don’t commute on highways, only pleasure jaunts, not an issue.

Being a recent model vehicle,I purposefully chose a model with a stronger chassis (I’m not advertising the make) It’s a well known one though.

The biggest dangers, in town are distracted drivers and the culprit is the mobile phone.

Don't forget you get 'Kotsuhi' in Japan, whereas I have a 10 mile (16km) drive into work each day. I recall receiving housing benefit too from work. Swings and roundabouts my friend. All I know is Japan was cheap when we was there in July. Now I can't even buy a Costa without feeling ripped off. It fair to say cost of living in the UK is ridiculous!
