So business as usual with Russia then.

OK if you sign deal with Russia cancel all of antirussian sanctions as well.

stand for your values and interests dear Japan!

not for USA ones!

act as sovereign country with clear policy!

its about time Fumio to start to work for interests of your own country!

We badly need the gas and oil.

Come January, Japanese homes and factories will have power and heat...... Are you watching Europe?

4 ( +11 / -7 )

It is a bit understandable Japan keeps the gas project there. The war would be over sooner or later. It seems Japanese companies have paid a lot of money for the gas project and don't like the project taken by China.

Common sense.

Japan as usual is playing both sides of the net.

Unfortunately, Japan, like many other countries, is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to energy resources. Hopefully this will change in the future with new developments.

“ So business as usual with Russia then. “

Japan is another slave, just like Europe; and it’s not pretty, to say the least; no wonder the Donald went bananas while talking with Jens Stoltenberg; (one of the best moments I’ve seen in politics; isn’t it great when politicians are not afraid of being outspoken and tell it like it is(?) )

when common sense prevails over meaningless antirussian sanctions ordered from white house...

Even satrapies have their limits - especially when obeying the Emperor who lives thousands of miles away in a different continent would mean the lights going out and the Japanese people going full Sri Linka on the LDP's derriere.

50% of the world's gas is owned by just three countries.

I think you meant produced. I believe America has the biggest oil reserves in the world in the ground, though I haven't gone back to fact-check that.

Just like EU, Japan need to buy time to become trully independent of Russian oil in future.

Japan Government should, be assisting home owners to adopt Solar Power, and other Power saving solutions, rather than bending over backwards and getting it, from external Power providers. Japan has an amazing abundance of power sources, which it is, somewhat depressingly, under utilizing.

Good news. It is not Japan's problem.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The Sakhalin 2 project accounts for around 9 percent of resource-poor Japan's LNG imports

An amount that could easily be covered and then some, by turning off the garish neon signs, pachinko lights and other unnecessary power usage that keeps Japan aglow 24/7. T’wud also help in the fight against global warming.

There is no reason for Japan to be ‘resource-poor’; it’s surrounded by seas (wave power), has plenty of mountainous areas with fast-flowing rivers (hydro power) and its position on the Ring of Fire that makes nuclear such a dodgy option offers a wealth of geothermal power.

Put solar panels on every roof, and tell Putler where to put his filthy Sakhalin 2 project.

I think Japan has no choice because of their claim that Sakhalin is Japanese teritory. Just like Chinese refusing to buy Siberian energy because the Chinese claim parts of Siberia belong to them. So Japan quitiing will be tantamount to admission that it is Russian territory and why would Chinese pay for stuff they claim belong to them

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Japan has also resumed the imports of Russian crude oil. It's time to quit this anti Russia circus. NATO should admit they miscalculated and try to find a way to end this proxy war, or they can keep the inflation spiraling up, and their peasants will start to uprise. The storm is already gathering on Europe as the living costs climb

This effectively means that when you cook your dinner, you're funding the Russian military.

No it means my family will have a hot meal. Something that may be a luxury soon in much of Europe.

Remember the USA and Canada don't care and aren't worried because this war is a boon to them a massive profit machine.

USA by selling weapons oil and gas and Canada by selling more oil and gas, sanctions caused the oil prices to rise finally making Canada's dirty oilsands profitable again and restarting production.

So while this winter Europe pays more and more and people go cold.

Remember that Canada and the USA will be nice and warm with full bank accounts from the high fuel prices Europe will be paying them for their oil and gas especially that dirty oilsands stuff.

The Sakhalin gas is cheaper than other countries. We need more of it not less. Reduce domestic gas prices and power too.

> Renewable energy will not replace coal or gas used in power generations until there is sufficient capacity.

Wow we agree on something!

The western countries (mostly USA and Canada) are telling Japan they can supply Japan but at a far higher price both in money and environmentally.

Canada's oil is the most environmentally unfriendly in the world and again another "accidental" release of contaminated oilsands waste water last week.

The USA is no better.

Then the added cost of long long long cross Pacific transport by ship.

Unlike Germany that depended on Russia for over 30% of its gas and 30% of its oil.

Japan has far more diversify.

Russia holds vast foreign currency reserves in Japan - which are currently frozen - so it's in Russia's interest to play nice with Japan if they ever want to see their money back once the war ends. Good move on Japan's part.

Bronco: "Stand with Zelensky in front of the cameras. Shake hands with Putin in the boardroom."

Exactly, except they only nation they have proven to support is Russia. With Ukraine, it's just lip-service.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Nothing surprise, Japan's always like using high moral standard to defend their own and snatching economic interest on the other way. Hypocritic enough, just like their non nuclear policy!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

The Russians should do everyone in Japan a big favor and cut off gas, oil, fish, wood and etc unless the ruling regime moves kick out the occupiers within a few weeks. Give them a few weeks before making them swim for their lives. That is as much goodwill that can be extended to the occupiers.

So then Japan can have a good relationship with all it's neighbors, even the present occupiers as long as they speak as not more than equals going forward.

China is by far Japan's biggest trading partner and obviously so important for Japanese culture and civilization. Japan gets most of its vital resources from Russia. Japan gets nuked cities and printed monopoly play money soon to be worthless from USA.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Japan has no choice as it’s own energy self sufficiency proposal is pathetic!

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

I think the story misses the difference between customers and investors.

The power generators are customers, who will have to negotiate sanctions to continue buying gas, like the Germans do.

The trading houses are investors, who have written off $1.7 billions of their stake, and it would be highly risky to continue to invest given Putin has proven to be thug and a thief.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Told you. So much for Japan "doing everything" to stop what Russia is doing, and saying they would "do everything" to stop China if it attacked Taiwan, too. Once again trying to play both sides.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Bronco, these Japanese companies are sellout, the world biggest oil companies lost billion in capital ,by pull out of this gas deal
